Full Cast Announced for Upcoming ‘Lord of the Rings’ Movie
The wait for Middle-earth’s return is over, as Warner Bros. and New Line have finally pulled back the curtain on the ensemble for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. During a high-profile CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Tuesday, the studios confirmed a mixture of legendary returning veterans and high-profile new faces for the prequel.
Most notably, Jamie Dornan has been tapped to portray Strider, the enigmatic Ranger of the North who will eventually become King Aragorn, stepping into a role previously defined by Viggo Mortensen. Dornan will be joined by The White Lotus standout Leo Woodall, who has been cast as a fellow Dúnedain named Halvard.
The film, which takes place in the years between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, focuses on the desperate search led by Gandalf and Aragorn to locate Gollum.
Andy Serkis is returning to both the director’s chair and the motion-capture suit to portray the titular creature, a character he first brought to life over two decades ago. “Across two trilogies, a mark of a Middle-earth film has always been the formidable array of talent brought to bear in every role,” Serkis remarked in a statement released after the panel.
The production is leaning heavily into its cinematic roots, bringing back Ian McKellen as the wizard Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins. Additionally, Lee Pace is set to reprise his role as the Elvenking Thranduil, while Kate Winslet joins the franchise in a new role as a character named Marigol.
Serkis expressed his excitement about blending these established icons with the fresh perspectives of the newcomers. “The Hunt for Gollum continues in that tradition, and I am delighted to announce the return of two of Middle-earth’s most beloved performers, alongside some exceptionally talented new additions to Tolkien’s world,” the director added.
As the film prepares for its December 17, 2027, release date, the actors involved have been keeping busy with a variety of major projects. Jamie Dornan recently garnered praise for his work in the final season of The Tourist and is currently filming the high-stakes Netflix thriller The Undertow, where he plays identical twin brothers.
Fans of the series have even more to look forward to beyond this initial prequel, as the studio has also teased a second film under the working title The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. This subsequent project is being penned by Stephen Colbert, a well-known Tolkien enthusiast.
While The Hunt for Gollum focuses on the bridge between the major trilogies, Colbert’s project is expected to delve into chapters of the novels that were previously omitted from the big screen.
