‘Mortal Kombat II’ Trailer Puts Johnny Cage in the Hot Seat and Demands He Step Up
Warner Bros. has finally dropped a new trailer for Mortal Kombat II after months of waiting. The studio had earlier pushed the film’s release from October 2025 to May 2026, but fans now have fresh footage to hold them over. The preview promises bigger fights, more story, and brutal fatalities that look ready for the big screen.
This time, the movie centers on the actual Mortal Kombat tournament. Unlike the 2021 film, the sequel fully dives into the iconic competition from the games. Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, takes the spotlight. He is introduced as a fading Hollywood actor who gets pulled into the deadly contest by Raiden and Sonya Blade.
The hero side includes familiar faces and new fighters. Cole returns, along with Kitana and Jax. On the villain side, Shao Kahn leads the charge, joined by Baraka, Sindel, and Quan Chi. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are back as well, continuing their long-running feud. This time, Sub-Zero appears in his darker wraith form, known as Noob Saibot.

At last year’s New York Comic-Con panel, director Simon McQuoid explained that the sequel aims to deliver a “full feature-length version” of the intense tone seen in the opening Scorpion and Sub-Zero fight from the 2021 reboot. Franchise creative director Ed Boon added that the new film raises the bar even higher. Double that intensity; I challenge you not to cry when you watch it, he said about the opening scene.
McQuoid and writer Jeremy Slater also shared at NYCC that the sequel expands the universe. There will be more characters, deeper lore, and far more action. Boon teased that the number of fights has doubled compared to the first film. Slater said that outside the tournament battles, the characters will go on personal “missions and adventures” that help shape their arcs throughout the story.
Mortal Kombat II is set to hit theaters on May 8. Warner Bros. is already developing a third film, showing strong confidence in the franchise’s future.
With the tournament finally taking center stage and a larger cast pulled straight from the games, the sequel looks ready to give longtime fans what they have been waiting for.
