Gypsy Rose Blanchard Faces Backlash for a Joke About Her Mother’s Murder

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is facing backlash after sharing a controversial video that some say crosses a line. The video, part of the trending “We listen, and we don’t judge” challenge with influencer Natalie Reynolds, included Gypsy making light of her prison time for her role in her mother’s murder.

In the clip, Gypsy mentions that she served eight and a half years for second-degree murder in connection with the death of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. While saying this, she mimed an exaggerated gesture around her neck.

When Reynolds acted shocked, Gypsy replied, “Hey, we listen, and we don’t judge.” Many viewers, however, were not amused. Comments ranged from “There’s absolutely nothing funny in this, this is actually so freaking wrong” to “What people do for views … so sad.” Later in the video, she added a bizarre personal confession, saying, “I used to wipe my bottom with bath towels instead of toilet paper.”

Gypsy’s case first gained global attention in 2015. She and her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, were involved in the killing of her mother, Dee Dee, who had subjected Gypsy to years of abuse. Dee Dee’s actions were later identified as Munchausen by proxy, which included forcing Gypsy to undergo unnecessary medical treatments. The case became widely known and inspired the Hulu series The Act.

Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and served nearly eight years of a ten-year sentence. Godejohn, who carried out the killing, received a life sentence and remains incarcerated. Gypsy was released in December 2023 and has since been adjusting to life outside prison.

Even years later, Gypsy’s life continues to draw attention. Her recent TikTok has sparked debate over whether it is appropriate for her to joke about the crime that made her infamous.
