“Being a dad, you know, having two young kids, and I feel like everything is just designed to scare them,” he said during an interview on The Tonight Show. “I was so grateful just as a father to get to make a story for my kids, maybe not to be too lofty, but for their generation, that kind of reminds you of what we’re capable of as human beings.”

He added, “It doesn’t pretend that there’s not going to be problems, but that we can solve them, you know? And anyway, [author Andy Weir] is a unique writer in that way. I think that’s why people love this book so much.”

Gosling’s comments show a mix of humor and honesty. He gave a quick answer about his personal preferences, but also reminded fans that his focus is on family and meaningful work.
