New Details Emerge Regarding ‘Buffy’ Star’s Death at 54
Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54. His passing was announced by his family on March 20, and new information has now emerged about the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner, Brendon was found by a longtime friend who had been staying with him to provide care. “The decedent resided alone and was discovered by a longtime friend who had been staying overnight to provide care,” Zeiner told PEOPLE.
The coroner added that Brendon was “positioned as if asleep” and that there is no evidence of foul play. Investigators are reviewing recent videos for any signs of prior illness. Final toxicology and autopsy results are still pending.
Brendon’s family shared a heartfelt statement on Instagram. “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” they wrote. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.”
The family also highlighted his creativity and personal challenges. They described Brendon as “passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
They acknowledged that he had health issues, including a heart attack in 2023 and a congenital heart defect, along with spinal procedures and struggles with substance abuse and mental health. “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart,” the statement concluded.
