Sharon Stone recently shared her critical perspective on the evolution of on-screen intimacy, contrasting the suggestive power of her past work with the explicitness found in modern television. During an appearance on CBS Mornings on April 5, the Academy Award nominee explained that she now chooses to skip past sexual content when watching TV.

She argued that today’s productions often favor a “blatant” and “harsh” approach that eliminates the need for any viewer participation. Reflecting on her iconic 1992 thriller Basic Instinct, Stone noted that the film’s most famous moment achieved its power through brevity and mystery.

She explained that the notorious shot occupied less than a single frame, leaving the audience to grapple with what they thought they had seen. According to the actress, this sense of intrigue is fundamental to human desire, stating, “And, so, people were desperately trying to figure it out. And I think that idea of, ‘Oh, my God.’ This hope, this wonder, this mystery, this intrigue, this yearning is something that is what all of our profound sexuality is based on.”

Stone expressed concern that the current media has traded this subtlety for a more graphic style that leaves little to the imagination. By presenting everything so clearly, she believes the magic of storytelling is often lost.

She explained her habit of using the remote to bypass these scenes, saying, “So often now, when sex scenes come on TV, I fast-forward. I don’t want to see it. I don’t want to have to go through all of this blatant, harsh sexuality. For me, it steals from my own imagination. And I prefer my yearning, mystery, desire. I want to keep that alive inside myself.”

The conversation also revisited the difficult history behind the film that launched her to international superstardom. In her 2021 memoir, Stone detailed her shock upon discovering the true nature of her nude scene during a screening with lawyers and agents.

She had previously been assured that nothing would be visible on camera. Reflecting on that realization, she wrote, “That was how I saw my v***na-shot for the first time, long after I’d been told, ‘We can’t see anything — I just need you to remove your panties, as the white is reflecting the light, so we know you have panties on.’ Now, here is the issue. It didn’t matter anymore. It was me and my parts up there. I had decisions to make.”

Beyond this reflection on her past, Sharon Stone is entering a highly productive phase of her career with several major projects on the horizon. She is currently preparing to join the third season of HBO’s Euphoria, where she is expected to play a pivotal role opposite stars like Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney.

Additionally, the actress recently starred in the action sequel Nobody 2, portraying a formidable antagonist alongside Bob Odenkirk. Fans of the Basic Instinct legacy are also tracking news of an upcoming reboot from United Artists and Amazon MGM Studios.

While Stone has expressed skepticism about revisitation of her most famous role, she remains focused on her new ventures, including the romantic drama What About Love, which recently debuted to positive reviews. As she continues her work on Euphoria, she remains one of the most vocal advocates for maintaining artistic mystery in Hollywood.
