“Malcolm in the Middle” Cast Reunites 20 Years Later at Reboot Premiere
The world of Malcolm in the Middle is coming back, and it looks like things have not calmed down at all. The revival, titled “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,” will arrive on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on April 10. The new story brings Malcolm back as an adult, but his life quickly gets messy again once his family is involved.
Malcolm is now older and has built a life away from his parents and brothers. He has a girlfriend named Tristan and a daughter named Leah. For a long time, he has managed to stay away from the chaos he grew up with. But that changes when he returns home for a big family event. His parents, Hal and Lois, are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary, and the gathering pulls everyone back together.
The revival includes many familiar faces from the original show. Frankie Muniz returns as Malcolm, while Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek are back as Hal and Lois. Christopher Masterson also returns as Francis, who is still with his wife Piama, played by Emy Coligado. Justin Berfield is back as Reese, and his personality seems just as wild as before.

In the trailer, Reese makes a comment about Malcolm, saying, “I think we all knew Malcolm would eventually betray us.” This shows that the same kind of humor from the original series is still present.
There are also some changes in the cast. Dewey is now played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark instead of Erik Per Sullivan. According to creator Linwood Boomer, Sullivan chose not to return to acting. He explained the situation in an interview with USA TODAY.
“Eric Sullivan hasn’t been an actor for decades. I asked him to repeat [Dewey]. We still talk all the time. I love him, and he didn’t want to be an actor anymore,” Boomer said. “He didn’t like [acting] 10 years ago, and he sure doesn’t now. I had to respect that.”
Boomer also shared that Sullivan supported the decision to recast the role. “Please just recast it. It’s fine.” The new actor was chosen because he felt like a natural fit. “He also really inhabits Dewey in a way that seems very believable. It really felt like this is how Dewey would be 20 years later.”
Another update involves Jamie, the younger brother who appeared later in the original series. He is now played by Anthony Timpano. The family has also grown, as Hal and Lois now have another child named Kelly, played by Vaughan Murrae.

The revival keeps the same idea that made the original show popular. Malcolm may try to live a normal life, but his family continues to pull him back into trouble. The mix of returning cast members and new additions gives the show a mix of old and new.
This revival has a strong chance to work because it stays true to the original idea. The family dynamic is still the main focus, and that is what fans loved. The changes in casting make sense, and the story feels like a natural continuation. It will be interesting to see if it can capture the same energy after so many years. What do you think about this return? Are you excited to see the family again, or do you think the story should have stayed in the past? Share your thoughts in the comments.
