Stephen Fry has offered a spirited defense of his marriage to Elliott Spencer, addressing those who take issue with the thirty-year age difference between the couple. The versatile entertainer appeared on the second series of The Assembly, a unique interview program where the questioning panel is comprised entirely of individuals who are neurodivergent or have learning disabilities.

During the episode, which aired on Wednesday, April 8, Fry engaged in a candid dialogue about his private life, mental health, and past struggles. The conversation turned to his romantic life when a participant, who also navigated an age-gap relationship, asked for his thoughts on public disapproval.

Fry expressed a sense of pity for those preoccupied with the personal lives of others, emphasizing that the emotional connection is the only factor that truly matters. “I feel a bit sorry for them. I don’t see why they should have such an opinion about things,” he remarked during the broadcast.

He further explained that their dynamic is built on mutual respect and shared decision-making rather than any form of imbalance. “The only thing that should matter in a relationship is love, and if you feel it,” Fry noted, adding that he trusts his husband to lead many aspects of their life together.

“I mean, I always say to people that in our relationship, Elliot has all the power, really,” he said. “He makes a lot of the decisions about things because I trust him to. It just works for us, extremely well, and if people don’t like it, well, sod them.”

The couple first crossed paths at a social gathering in 2012 and moved quickly toward marriage in early 2015. While they typically maintain a low profile, Fry has previously credited the 38-year-old Spencer with keeping him connected to contemporary culture, including introducing him to the works of modern poets like Kendrick Lamar.

The interview on The Assembly pushed even further into personal territory, with the panel asking about intimate details that Fry humorously declined to specify, though he admitted he was surprised by the intense curiosity regarding his private habits.

Beyond his television appearances, Fry has remained a prolific figure in the global entertainment landscape throughout the early parts of the year. He recently received a straight-to-series order from Fox for a new spy drama titled The Interrogator, which he will write, executive produce, and lead as the titular character.

The series, produced in partnership with Lionsgate, is currently in development and is expected to anchor the network’s broadcast schedule. Additionally, Fry continues to be the voice of numerous high-profile audiobooks.
