Popular Show Canceled by Peacock After Just One Season
Peacock has decided not to move forward with a second season of its high-concept spy thriller, The Copenhagen Test. The series, which starred Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera, was reportedly canceled following its eight-episode debut in late December.
Despite garnering a respectable 71% critical score and an 80% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the show struggled to maintain a consistent spot in the streaming top 10 after its premiere week.
The narrative follows Alexander Hale, a Chinese-American intelligence analyst played by Liu, who discovers his mind has been compromised by mysterious hackers. With his every sight and sound accessible to unknown perpetrators, Hale is forced into a 24-hour performance to expose the culprits while proving his loyalty to his agency.
Barrera starred as his companion, who secretly reported on his actions to their headquarters. Although the streaming series has reached its conclusion, both lead actors have successfully transitioned to the Broadway stage this spring.
Simu Liu is currently making his debut in the Tony-nominated comedy Oh, Mary! at the Lyceum Theatre. He is portraying the role of Mary’s Teacher through April 21, before Cheyenne Jackson returns to the production.
Melissa Barrera has also made a splash in New York, starring as Rose DeWitt Bukater in the campy musical parody Titanique. The show officially celebrated its Broadway opening night earlier this week on April 12, after a wildly successful run off-Broadway.
Her performance has been a highlight of the production, which reimagines the events of the Titanic through the lens of a Céline Dion concert. Beyond their stage work, both stars have major cinematic projects on the horizon.
Simu Liu is preparing to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Shang-Chi in the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for a December release. Melissa Barrera is currently attached to several independent film projects.
