The concept of the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” may be a staple of pop culture, but mathematical data suggests that the true anchor of the cinematic world is actually Sir Christopher Lee.

In early 2020, Rhyd Lewis of Cardiff University’s School of Mathematics published a study titled Who is the Centre of the Movie Universe? utilizing Python to map the social networks of every performer listed on IMDb.

The research analyzed millions of connections to identify which individual acted as the most significant bridge between all other actors in history. Lewis utilized three distinct statistical metrics to evaluate his findings: Degree Centrality, Betweenness Centrality, and Closeness Centrality.

While the first category—a simple count of total unique co-stars—is topped by Indian actor Nassar, the other two metrics are dominated by Lee. Betweenness Centrality identifies the actors who most frequently serve as the shortest link between any two other performers, while Closeness Centrality measures the average number of “hops” required to connect one person to the rest of the industry.

The data reveals that Christopher Lee is the ultimate connector, requiring an average of only 2.88 steps to reach any other actor in the world. A remarkable 99% of all actors in the database can be linked to the British legend in five steps or fewer.

This staggering interconnectedness is largely credited to a career that spanned from 1948 until his passing in 2015. Despite being told early on that his 6’5″ frame made him “too tall” for a successful acting career, Lee appeared in massive ensemble franchises that maximized his statistical reach.

Although the legendary actor passed away over a decade ago, his presence remains active in 2026. The documentary The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee has recently reached wider audiences following its festival debut.
