Chris Evans Explains Why He Returned for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Chris Evans is officially back in the Marvel universe, and he has now explained why he agreed to return for Avengers: Doomsday. The actor, best known for playing Steve Rogers, said his comeback was not a casual decision and only made sense because of the story.
Speaking at CinemaCon 2026, Evans addressed the long-running rumors about his return. He made it clear that he was not interested in coming back just for nostalgia or a short appearance. Instead, he said the plot itself needed his character in a meaningful way.
He explained, “I said I would only come back if there was a real reason, and in Doomsday, there’s a very real reason why these heroes need Steve Rogers.”
The event also featured Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, along with directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. Robert Downey Jr. also appeared as part of the presentation, where it was confirmed he will return as Doctor Doom. Evans reacted to the reveal with humor, saying, “I don’t like him.” Early footage shown at the event also suggested a reunion between Steve Rogers and Thor.
Evans had previously denied being involved in the project, saying in 2025 that he was done with the role and enjoying retirement. Despite that, speculation continued until Marvel officially confirmed his return.
Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a major crossover event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is expected to bring together characters from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and even the X-Men from earlier Fox films. Reports also suggest the story will explore Steve Rogers’ personal life, including his relationship with Peggy Carter and their son, with Hayley Atwell expected to return.
According to Marvel Studios announcements and CinemaCon 2026 coverage, the film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written as part of the larger Multiverse Saga storyline. The project has gone through several changes over the years before taking its current form.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on December 18.
Evans returning only when the story “matters” to him makes the comeback more interesting. It suggests Marvel is trying to make these returns feel more story-driven instead of just fan service. What do you think about Chris Evans coming back as Steve Rogers? Share your thoughts in the comments.
