New ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Scenes Coming – Directly Tied to Doomsday, Says Joe Russo
Marvel is planning a clear link between two major Avengers films. The studio is using the return of Avengers: Endgame in cinemas to help set up Avengers: Doomsday in a more direct way than usual.
The update comes from Joe Russo, who is co-directing Doomsday. He explained at the Sands Film Festival in St Andrews that the upcoming re-release of Endgame will not just be for nostalgia. Instead, it will include new content that connects directly to the next film in the MCU.
According to Russo, the goal is to turn Endgame into part of the next story. He said the re-release will include added footage that links the events of both films. This means the older movie will help lead into the new one when it arrives later in the year.
He made it clear that this is an intentional creative decision. The re-release is being treated as part of the overall storyline rather than a simple return to theaters. It will help guide audiences toward what happens next in Doomsday.
Kevin Feige has also spoken about the direction of the next Avengers films. One of the biggest changes is the return of Robert Downey Jr., but not in his old role as Iron Man. He will instead play Victor von Doom.
Feige explained that the idea came at a time when Downey’s career was getting strong attention again after Oppenheimer. The team felt it was the right moment to try something different and bold with the character.
The film’s direction is also being shaped by Anthony Russo, who talked about how the villain is being developed. He said the focus is not only on power or scale, but also on personal struggles within the character. Even someone with extreme abilities will still have emotional weak points that matter in the story.
The plan from Marvel is to use Endgame as a setup point. Then Doomsday will take the story in a new direction with a darker tone and a different focus compared to past Avengers films.
Avengers: Endgame is set to return to theaters on September 25. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release on December 18.
This is a risky but interesting idea. Using an old movie to build into a new one is not something studios often do, so it could feel fresh if handled well. It also shows Marvel is trying to connect its story in a more planned way again. What do you think about this approach? Share your thoughts in the comments.
