Oscar Isaac Holds the Key to Moon Knight’s MCU Return, and His Unique Contract Explains Everything

Rumor: Marvel Is Supposedly Still Working on 'Moon Knight' Season 2

Few Marvel characters have left as large a cultural footprint from a single outing as Oscar Isaac’s Marc Spector. When ‘Moon Knight‘ debuted on Disney+ in 2022, it quickly became one of Marvel Studios’ most celebrated Disney+ originals, with Isaac’s layered, physically committed portrayal of a man fractured across multiple identities earning widespread praise from critics and audiences alike. Yet despite that warm reception, the white-caped vigilante has been conspicuously absent from the wider MCU ever since.

Following ‘Moon Knight’s’ March 2022 debut, the show was never renewed for a second season, and outside of voicing the hero in the first episode of ‘What If…?’ Season 3, Isaac has not reprised the role in any live-action MCU release over the last four years. For a character with such obvious staying power, that silence has been puzzling, and fans have been searching for an explanation.

Now, series head writer Jeremy Slater has offered a candid look behind the curtain. In an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com conducted while promoting ‘Mortal Kombat II,’ Slater explained that Isaac’s deal with Marvel is structured around a straightforward but unusual condition, with the studio committed to making more stories “when we find stories that he is creatively excited to tell.” Marvel can essentially bring him back whenever the right project materializes, but Isaac has to genuinely want to be there for it.

This arrangement sets Isaac apart from most MCU stars, who typically sign multi-project deals upon entering the franchise, locking them into a fixed slate of appearances regardless of creative input. Slater framed the challenge for Marvel as one of creative matchmaking, describing the real task as figuring out “what stories does Oscar want to explore, and how does he want that character to be used” and finding something compelling enough to bring him back.

Slater was also open about how much distance now exists between him and the studio. He admitted he has not spoken to Marvel in roughly three years and has no inside knowledge of what is being planned, whether that is a second season, a solo film, or a ‘Midnight Sons’ ensemble project. Still, his optimism was clear. He expressed confidence that Isaac would return, citing the actor’s pride in the show and the positive response it received from fans.

The collapse of the standalone ‘Blade’ film has expanded the conversation about where Marc Spector resurfaces next, with industry whispers increasingly pointing toward a ‘Midnight Sons’ supernatural ensemble as the most likely vehicle for his return. Isaac himself has spoken openly about his enthusiasm for the concept on the ‘Happy, Sad, Confused’ podcast, noting that he would want any continuation to handle Marc’s Dissociative Identity Disorder storyline in a way that feels respectful and necessary, not just a plot device.

The picture that emerges is of a character whose future is genuinely in the hands of its star, which is a rare dynamic in a universe built on studio-controlled multi-film architecture. Marvel knows where to find Isaac, and the door is clearly open, but the right story has to come first. Whether that means a solo continuation, a role in a ‘Midnight Sons’ team-up, or something no one has predicted yet, the next chapter of ‘Moon Knight’ appears to be waiting on a creative spark rather than a contractual deadline.

What kind of story do you think would finally be compelling enough to bring Marc Spector back to the MCU?
