‘Elden Ring’ Movie Spotted Filming Atop a Real Medieval Castle

Few video game adaptations have arrived with the kind of genuine creative hunger that surrounds the upcoming ‘Elden Ring‘ film, and a fresh wave of excitement just broke across social media after on-the-ground footage emerged showing what appears to be active production at one of Wales’ most iconic landmarks. The A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment production, written and directed by Alex Garland, is currently shooting in the United Kingdom and is set for a March 3, 2028 theatrical release. For a project this anticipated, every scrap of real-world evidence is being devoured by a hungry fandom.

The film draws from the 2022 video game developed by FromSoftware, set within a fictional world co-created with George R.R. Martin, the author behind ‘A Song of Ice and Fire.’ Since its release, ‘Elden Ring’ has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and received over 400 Game of the Year awards, cementing its place as both a commercial phenomenon and a defining cultural moment in gaming. The scale of that legacy is part of why Garland’s personal passion for the project has resonated so strongly with fans from the very beginning.

The TikTok account mightbeliber posted footage from Conwy Castle in North Wales showing armored figures positioned along the battlements of the medieval fortress, sending the adaptation’s fanbase into an immediate frenzy. Only two days of active filming were planned at the castle, taking place on May 21 and 22, amid online speculation that the location would double for either Castle Morne or Stormveil Castle from ‘Elden Ring.’ Shoot trucks had arrived in Conwy the night before filming began, with the adjacent Vicarage Gardens Car Park fully closed to accommodate the production’s technical vehicles.

The production is being overseen by London-based Katana Films Ltd, and Companies House records show that Garland briefly served as a director of the company during the summer of 2025. Alongside the Welsh locations, ‘Elden Ring’ is also filming across England and Scotland, with principal photography having already taken place at Greenwich Naval College in South London, and Iceland confirmed for additional sequences later this summer. The scope of the practical location work signals that Garland is not leaning entirely on visual effects to build the Lands Between.

Garland aggressively pursued the adaptation by writing a sprawling 160-page script entirely on spec, accompanied by an additional 40 pages of visuals, before personally pitching the project to FromSoftware and Bandai Namco. The result is being shot in IMAX, a technical commitment that underscores just how visually ambitious the production intends to be. The film is reported to be A24’s most expensive and ambitious feature project to date.

The ensemble cast includes Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz. Producers on the film include Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, George R.R. Martin, and Vince Gerardis. With that level of talent assembled behind and in front of the camera, and real medieval stonework now serving as the backdrop for the Lands Between, the ‘Elden Ring’ adaptation is starting to feel less like a promise and more like an event.

Whether Conwy’s ancient towers make a convincing Stormveil is a debate only the finished film can settle, so what do you think of a real Welsh castle standing in for one of gaming’s most iconic fortress locations?
