‘Dutton Ranch’ Is Outrunning ‘GTA VI’ and the FIFA World Cup to Become 2026’s Biggest Pop Culture Phenomenon

Taylor Sheridan has spent years building one of the most loyal audiences in modern television, and ‘Yellowstone‘ proved that the Western genre still carries enormous commercial weight in the streaming era. When that flagship series wrapped, the burning question for fans was always the same: what happens to Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler next?

‘Dutton Ranch’ arrived on Paramount+ on May 15 as a direct continuation of that story, following Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) as they gamble on a fresh start at a cattle ranch in South Texas, only to find that trouble travels well. The cast also includes Finn Little, Ed Harris, and Annette Bening, with the series based on characters originally created by Sheridan and John Linson.

Now the show is doing something few expected. According to The Wrap, ‘Dutton Ranch’ is beating both ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ and the FIFA World Cup in popularity, positioning Taylor Sheridan’s latest effort as one of the most-watched entertainment properties of the year across any medium. That is a remarkable claim, and the surrounding circumstances go a long way toward explaining how it happened.

‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ has been delayed multiple times, initially targeting a fall 2025 window before being pushed to May 2026 and then again to November 19, 2026, with Rockstar citing the need for additional development time and technical stability. Each postponement has quietly eroded fan enthusiasm. The FIFA World Cup has faced its own turbulence, with controversy over United States travel restrictions that could prevent ticketholders from several African and Middle Eastern countries from attending matches, fueling a widespread boycott movement that appears to have dented public interest.

Into that unusual cultural gap stepped ‘Dutton Ranch’, and the numbers reflect it clearly. Per data shared by Paramount, the first two episodes reached 12.9 million views on Paramount+ within seven days of their debut, making it the biggest series launch in the streamer’s history and surpassing the previous record of 8.8 million set by ‘Mobland’ in 2025. An additional 2.9 million viewers tuned in via the linear Paramount Network on premiere night.

The critical reception has matched the audience enthusiasm, with the show currently holding an 88 percent Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.4 on IMDb. Reviewers have also highlighted that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s chemistry feels richer and more lived-in than ever, with Annette Bening and Ed Harris adding considerable weight to the new Texas setting.

New episodes drop on Paramount+ every Friday, and with the show already poised to lead Nielsen’s streaming charts for its debut week, the momentum shows no signs of slowing. Beth and Rip’s grip on audiences clearly did not loosen when the Duttons left Montana.

Are you already watching ‘Dutton Ranch’, or is Beth finally getting her Texas era the reason you are reconsidering that Paramount+ subscription?
