‘Resident Evil: Veronica’ Is Finally Getting the Remake It Always Deserved, and the First Teaser Is Already Stunning
The ‘Resident Evil’ franchise has spent the better part of a decade proving that its classic entries deserve a second life, and Capcom has shown little sign of slowing down. The studio has built a remarkable track record with modern remakes, having revisited the original 1996 game, ‘Resident Evil 2’, ‘Resident Evil 3’, and ‘Resident Evil 4’ in rapid succession between 2019 and 2023. Each one arrived with a fresh visual language and modernized gameplay, yet remained faithful enough to the source material to satisfy longtime fans. The question for years was which classic would be next.
For many in the community, the answer was obvious. ‘Resident Evil: Code Veronica’, originally released on the Sega Dreamcast in 2000, takes place three months after the events of ‘Resident Evil 2’ and follows Claire Redfield as she searches for her missing brother Chris after escaping Raccoon City. Despite being overlooked by some due to its non-numbered title, the original scored a 94 on Metacritic at launch and is widely regarded by fans as one of the most story-rich entries in the franchise. It has long been considered the most deserving game in the series to receive the remake treatment.
That wait is officially over. Capcom lifted the veil on the long-rumored remake at Summer Game Fest, unveiling it simply as ‘Resident Evil Veronica’ following months of rumors pointing to its existence. Geek Vibes Nation shared the first teaser at the event, and the footage immediately set the internet alight. The in-engine cinematic trailer introduces players to a Paris setting and confirms a 2027 release window.
The debut trailer opens with protagonist Claire Redfield visiting an older woman in France, with this segment presented in a first-person perspective, seemingly confirming that ‘Resident Evil: Veronica’ will once again let players choose between first- and third-person camera modes, similar to ‘Resident Evil Requiem’. Claire is subsequently detained by a mysterious figure who may very well be Hunk, before brief glimpses of various iconic environments flash across the screen, including classic zombies returning in all their flesh-hungry glory.
A brief glimpse of a more weathered Claire Redfield also appears, closely resembling Capcom’s design of the character from Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness’ miniseries. Chris Redfield and Steve Burnside were not directly confirmed in this trailer, suggesting Capcom is saving those reveals for later, while franchise villain Albert Wesker is expected to return given the significant role he plays in the original game’s events.
The remake appears to continue using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine, which has powered every major entry in the series since ‘Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’ in 2017. ‘Resident Evil: Veronica’ is confirmed for PS5, Xbox, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Looking further ahead, reports suggest Capcom plans to follow this with a remake of ‘Resident Evil Zero’ in 2028, rounding out the studio’s ambitious effort to modernize its early catalogue before returning to all-new mainline territory.
For fans who have spent years insisting that ‘Code Veronica’ deserved its moment in the spotlight, this announcement feels like vindication. Whether Capcom leans into the oppressive island atmosphere of the original or expands the Paris prologue into something more substantial will be endlessly debated until launch, so share your thoughts below on what you are most hoping to see from this remake.
