James Gunn Drops a Breathtaking ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Tease From Inside Superman’s Fortress of Solitude
The DC Universe is barely a year old, and James Gunn is already reminding the world that he knows exactly how to command attention. Since taking the reins as DC Studios co-CEO alongside Peter Safran, Gunn has made a habit of stoking fan enthusiasm between releases, offering glimpses behind the curtain that feel intimate rather than promotional. It is a strategy that has served him well, and the latest offering from his social media is no exception.
The first ‘Superman’ film introduced audiences to a Man of Steel who retreats to his Fortress of Solitude after suffering his first defeat, only to be unknowingly followed by one of Lex Luthor’s allies. That iconic location proved central to the story and clearly left a mark on fans, so it makes sense that Gunn would return to it as a touchstone for building anticipation around the sequel. When filming the original, Gunn selected the Adventdalen Valley in Svalbard, Norway, as the real-world anchor for the Fortress, citing the region’s unmatched natural beauty and varied Arctic landscape as key reasons for choosing it over other locations around the world.
Now, with production firmly underway on the follow-up, Gunn took to X this weekend to share something far more evocative. The DC Studios chief posted a striking behind-the-scenes image captioned simply “Inside the Fortress,” showing David Corenswet’s Superman standing at the threshold of the legendary hideaway, his red cape catching the diffused light as the geometric architecture of the Fortress frames the shot from within. The image racked up 428K views within hours, a testament to how hungry the fandom remains for any morsel from this world.
The plot of ‘Man of Tomorrow’ picks up 30 years after Superman first arrived on Earth, opening with the Man of Steel suffering his first defeat before retreating once again to the Fortress of Solitude, unaware he is being tailed by one of Luthor’s allies. Given that framing, the Fortress is not merely a set piece in this sequel but a narrative pivot point, which makes Gunn’s choice to tease it specifically feel deliberate and loaded with meaning.
Principal photography for ‘Man of Tomorrow’ began in April 2026, with filming taking place at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as in the United Kingdom and Cincinnati, Ohio, and is expected to run until mid-2026. In the sequel, Superman is forced into an unlikely alliance with Lex Luthor, played again by Nicholas Hoult, as the two work together to take down the super-intelligent villain Brainiac, portrayed by Lars Eidinger. Adria Arjona has also joined the cast, with reports indicating she will play Maxima, an alien queen with a complicated history with Superman in the comics.
‘Man of Tomorrow’ is currently set to land in theaters on July 9, 2027, following the 2026 DCU releases of ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Clayface’. Before the sequel arrives, Corenswet’s Superman is set to appear in ‘Supergirl’, which opens June 26, with Milly Alcock starring in the title role. When asked recently how filming on ‘Man of Tomorrow’ was going, Gunn replied to a fan on Threads with two words: “Beautifully and unstintingly.”
For a director who already proved he could relaunch the DC Universe with both critical goodwill and commercial momentum, the casual confidence of a single Fortress image says everything. With set photos, teaser glimpses, and now this atmospheric behind-the-scenes drop, the hype machine is quietly but unmistakably running. Does the Fortress of Solitude imagery in ‘Man of Tomorrow’ make you more excited about where Corenswet’s Superman story is heading, or is it the Brainiac and Warsuit angle that has you most intrigued?
