‘Star Trek: Shadow Frontier’ Just Reinvented the Final Frontier as a Psychological Nightmare
The ‘Star Trek’ franchise has boldly gone through iterations across television, film, and gaming for decades, but it has never quite ventured into full-on psychological horror territory. That boundary is about to be shattered in a very big way, and the creative team behind it might just be the most fitting one imaginable.
Bloober Team, the studio behind the acclaimed ‘Silent Hill 2’ remake, has teamed up with Paramount Games Studio to announce ‘Star Trek: Shadow Frontier’, a psychological horror game set within the beloved science fiction universe. The project was unveiled during IGN Live and represents the franchise’s first full foray into the psychological horror genre.
The choice of protagonist is one of the announcement’s most exciting details for longtime Trekkies. The game centers on Ro Laren, the Bajoran former Starfleet officer who was a recurring character in the latter seasons of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ and also appeared in the final season of ‘Star Trek: Picard’. Michelle Forbes is returning to lend her voice and reprise the beloved role of the tough, outspoken Bajoran officer.
After responding to a distress call, Ro crash-lands on a planet described as a spaceship graveyard, where the world is hostile, filled with twisted creatures, dangerous ecosystems, and a mysterious force that threatens both her body and mind. According to the Steam description, the planet has been taken over by an alien entity and Ro’s mission is driven by duty and purpose, but discovery comes at a terrible cost, pulling her deeper into a corrupted labyrinth where her memories twist and reality begins to fracture.
Players will have access to authentic ‘Star Trek’ technology, including a Tricorder to scan and analyze objects and a Phaser that can be used to both solve puzzles and dispatch enemies. The gameplay loop appears to be structured around narrative discovery and the psychological state of the protagonist as she navigates the harrowing challenges of her environment, a deliberate departure from the action-heavy shooter mechanics that have dominated previous ‘Star Trek’ games.
Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno spoke directly to the passion driving the project. In a press release via Gematsu, Babieno said the studio has been waiting a long time to share the project, describing Star Trek as a franchise that has held a special place in their hearts as lifelong science fiction fans, adding that combining that passion with what they do best in horror has allowed them to partner with Paramount to create something truly unique and refreshingly different.
Shawn Kittelsen, SVP and Head of Creative and Production at Paramount Games Studio, expressed full confidence in Bloober’s ability to honor the ‘Star Trek’ legacy while pushing it forward with something bold and new for the beloved franchise. ‘Star Trek: Shadow Frontier’ is targeting a launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC in 2027.
Whether you are a lifelong Trekkie or a horror game devotee, the meeting of these two worlds feels genuinely unprecedented, and the conversation is just getting started. Are you ready to follow Ro Laren into the darkness, or does a horror-soaked ‘Star Trek’ feel like too bold a reinvention of a franchise built on hope and exploration?
