Star Wars fans have gotten used to scanning every Disney convention lineup for hints about what is coming next for the galaxy far, far away, and this year is proving no different. Disney’s fan convention has become the go to launchpad for major franchise announcements, with Lucasfilm quietly slipping another animated surprise into an already packed weekend of programming. The timing is notable too, since the franchise’s usual release calendar has looked thinner than fans are used to in 2026.

That thinner slate makes sense given the year’s shakeups. With Ahsoka Season 2 pushed to early next year and a follow up to Maul likely still a few years away, the outlook for Star Wars Disney Plus content for the rest of 2026 has looked rather sparse, leaving a gap that a new animated LEGO project could conveniently fill.

Enter the actual news, first spotted by fan account Star Wars Holocron on X. Disney has officially confirmed a brand new LEGO Star Wars animated project, and it will get an early screening at D23 next month. The company announced a special screening of an all new LEGO Star Wars animated adventure filled with iconic characters, unexpected laughs, and action packed fun as part of its programming lineup for D23, The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, taking place in Anaheim, California from August 14 through 16, 2026.

The screening itself has a set time and place. Guests will be able to catch the special LEGO Star Wars presentation on Saturday, August 15, at 10 a.m. on the Hyperion Stage. Disney has kept most of the actual content under wraps for now, only teasing the tone of the project rather than any plot specifics.

Naturally, that vagueness has not stopped speculation. Some outlets have floated the idea that this new special could specifically be a LEGO take on ‘The Mandalorian’, with The Direct reporting that the D23 schedule points to an unannounced ‘LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian’ animated special getting its early screening at the same August 15 slot. If accurate, it would mark a fitting follow up to ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ hitting theaters earlier this year.

This would not be Lucasfilm’s first rodeo with brick built Star Wars stories either. Disney has spent the past several years building out a steady stream of LEGO Star Wars content, with ‘Rebuild the Galaxy’ debuting on Disney Plus in September 2024, followed by its sequel, ‘Rebuild the Galaxy, Pieces of the Past,’ arriving a year later in September 2025. That consistent yearly rhythm is a big reason fans expected another entry to surface around this year’s convention.

As for what comes after the screening, industry watchers seem to think a wider rollout is likely. Given the franchise’s track record, a full trailer, cast announcement, and firm release date for the new LEGO Star Wars project could accompany the D23 screening itself, mirroring how both previous ‘Rebuild the Galaxy’ installments received their major reveals at similar Disney fan events.

For now, Star Wars fans will just have to wait a few more weeks to see whether Disney confirms the Mandalorian rumors or unveils something else entirely. Do you think this new LEGO Star Wars special is secretly about Din Djarin and Grogu, or is Lucasfilm cooking up a completely different corner of the galaxy in brick form?
