Sink has started opening up about what drew her to the role, and the picture she paints is far from a simple hero’s journey. Speaking with Variety, she explained that giving Jean a backstory was essential given her actions in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ noting that the character is deeply flawed and has been harmed even though she isn’t meant to be a villain. That framing, she said, gives Jean’s choices real motive rather than turning her into a stock antagonist.
The actress also teased where that complexity might take her next. She said the more she researched the X-Men, the more she realized what makes them special is that they are all incredibly flawed and have sometimes done bad things, which she believes makes for more compelling and complex heroes. Sink has already met with Schreier and taken part in screen tests alongside potential castmates, even though she admits she still doesn’t have every answer about Jean’s future.
The film is currently expected to hit theaters in 2028, though rumors persist that Jean could pop up in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ before then. No official release date has been locked in, and Marvel has stayed characteristically quiet on further plot details. Still, with three major mutants already confirmed and a director who just proved he can juggle a crowded ensemble on ‘Thunderbolts*,’ expectations are climbing fast.
