Is Vision Set to Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or Is Marvel Saving Him for ‘Secret Wars’

Notably, several other high profile MCU names are also absent from the announced list, including Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Paul Bettany Comments on His Avengers Future

Bettany himself has repeatedly addressed the speculation without fully resolving it. In an interview with The Telegraph, Bettany revealed he has some Avengers duties in 2026, saying he thinks he has some Avengers duties next year, and joking that it is not as though he is turning down acclaimed filmmakers to go do Marvel movies, since those calls simply have not come.

Pressed further on a separate podcast appearance, Bettany’s answer stayed deliberately vague. When the host noted that Bettany had previously teased he would likely appear in Avengers: Secret Wars if not in Avengers: Doomsday, the actor offered a cautious response, saying he thinks so. He has since reiterated that he expects to show up in either Doomsday or Secret Wars, while cautioning that Marvel could always change its plans.

There is a practical detail feeding the ongoing speculation. Reports have indicated that Avengers: Doomsday is undergoing reshoots, which theoretically leaves the door open for Marvel to work Vision or other members of the Maximoff family into the final cut even after principal photography wrapped. While the movie question remains unresolved, Bettany’s next confirmed appearance as Vision is locked in for television. ‘VisionQuest’ will premiere on Disney Plus on October 14, 2026, serving as the third chapter in a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued through ‘Agatha All Along.’

The series picks up with Vision searching for identity and purpose after the events of ‘WandaVision.’ After regaining his memories from the hex born version of himself, White Vision flew off in search of his purpose, and the series finds him in hiding to live a quiet life until a bounty is placed on his head. Physical, personified manifestations of past AI systems created by Tony Stark pursue him, forcing Vision to partner with Ultron, played once again by James Spader, in order to escape and take control of his own life.

Bettany has described the show’s tone as deeply introspective. He said the series finds Vision at a point where he is trying to figure out who he is and what he is for, with a lot of philosophical debate between his character and Spader’s Ultron, delivered alongside plenty of action. The season also involves Ultron revealing that the son Vision believed was only an illusion may in fact be alive and searching for his father.

What Vision’s Absence Could Mean for ‘Secret Wars’

For now, the most consistent read across Bettany’s own comments is that his Avengers return, if it happens, is more likely tied to ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ than to ‘Doomsday.’ Terry Matalas serves as the showrunner of VisionQuest, while Anthony and Joe Russo remain the directors of both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set for release on December 17, 2027.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026, giving Marvel a narrow window to either confirm or rule out a surprise Vision appearance before the film locks. Given the studio’s track record of guarding reveals until the last possible moment, nothing here should be treated as final until Marvel says so directly.
