‘Spider-Man’ and ‘The Odyssey’ Are Still Neck and Neck as the Box Office Heads Into Labor Day
Late summer box office battles rarely stay this competitive for this long, but two of the year’s biggest theatrical juggernauts have kept trading blows deep into their respective runs. As Labor Day weekend approaches, the daily numbers coming out of theaters continue to tell a story of genuine staying power rather than the usual late-August slowdown.
That staying power was on full display heading into the Monday before the holiday, with early tracking numbers showing just how tight the race at the top remains. Rather than one clear frontrunner pulling away, the day’s projections painted a picture of two very different blockbusters essentially running neck and neck.
According to box office tracker crazymoviekid, Monday, August 31 projections had ‘The Odyssey‘ leading with roughly $1.9 million, followed closely by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ at approximately $1.8 million. ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ rounded out third place with an estimated $1.4 million, while ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ and a smaller release trailed further behind at $800,000 and $666,000 respectively.
That razor-thin gap between the top two films reflects just how evenly matched their theatrical runs have become at this stage. ‘The Odyssey’ has continued posting historic numbers well into its seventh weekend, while ‘Brand New Day’ has remained the dominant domestic force for five straight weekends running, a combination that’s kept both films firmly planted at the top of daily charts even on a slower Monday.
Internationally, that same competitive dynamic has played out as well. In Australia, ‘Brand New Day’ has remained the No. 1 film for five consecutive weekends, adding $3.02 million and pushing its total box office gross there to $81 million, while ‘The Odyssey’ followed in second place with $2.24 million in its seventh weekend, bringing its Australian total to $60.2 million.
‘Coyote vs. Acme’ continues showing genuine staying power of its own for a film that spent years shelved before Ketchup Entertainment brought it to theaters. Its ongoing daily contributions toward that total reflect steady, consistent legs rather than a front-loaded opening followed by a rapid collapse, a pattern that’s become increasingly rare for mid-budget animated releases.
With so much of current cinema screen space still dominated by these two major titles, exhibitors have found themselves in an unusually fortunate position heading into the holiday stretch. Fan commentary tracking the daily numbers has noted that a significant share of showtimes at many theaters remain devoted almost entirely to ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey,’ underscoring just how much runway both films still have left.

As Labor Day weekend arrives, all eyes will be on whether either film can pull ahead decisively or whether this closely contested race continues straight through the holiday. Either way, the numbers suggest audiences still aren’t done showing up for either title.
