‘The Uprising’ Star Andrew Garfield Still Thinks a Gay Spider-Man Could Happen

Superhero casting debates have a way of resurfacing every few years, but few actors have stayed as consistently outspoken on the subject as Andrew Garfield. Long before inclusive superhero storytelling became a mainstream industry talking point, Garfield was already pushing back against the idea that Spider-Man had to fit one narrow mold.

That advocacy dates back over a decade, long before he’d even wrapped his run as Peter Parker in the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films. Now, more than ten years removed from those original comments, Garfield has revisited the topic once again, making clear his stance hasn’t shifted an inch with time.

Andrew Garfield says he still believes a gay Spider-Man could happen. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he explained, “I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit… You don’t see skin color, you don’t see gender, you don’t see sexuality. Anyone can project themselves into that suit.”

Garfield’s original comments trace back to a 2013 interview tied to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ where he recalled a conversation with producer Matt Tolmach about reimagining the character’s love interest, Mary Jane Watson. As he described it at the time, “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ… I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!… So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

Reflecting on that moment now, Garfield told Entertainment Weekly it was “an exercise in rebellion” that he felt genuinely passionate about, and that his underlying belief in the character’s universal accessibility hasn’t wavered since. He’s framed Spider-Man’s masked anonymity as central to what makes the character resonate so widely, arguing that the suit itself erases the visible markers that often limit who audiences imagine themselves seeing in a role.

This isn’t the only time Garfield has revisited the idea publicly over the years. In a separate interview with Mic, he expressed hope for reaching “the point where we don’t have to have this conversation,” envisioning a future where a pansexual or gay Spider-Man wouldn’t be treated as a defining plot point at all, simply as one more valid version of a character built for anyone to project themselves onto.

Garfield played Peter Parker across 2012’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and its 2014 sequel before Sony rebooted the franchise again with Tom Holland taking over the role. He briefly returned to the role in 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ reuniting with fellow Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Holland in a multiverse-spanning team-up that became one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

Whether Marvel or Sony ever actually greenlights a gay or bisexual version of Spider-Man in live action remains an open question, and nothing in Garfield’s latest comments suggests any official movement in that direction. Still, his continued willingness to advocate for a more expansive version of the character keeps the conversation alive more than a decade after he first raised it.
