Ryan Reynolds Confirms Fans Will Finally Learn Why Thor Was Crying in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Some Marvel mysteries get answered within a single post-credits scene. Others linger for years, fueling fan theories, meme wars and increasingly absurd Comic-Con call-outs long after the movie that started it all has left theaters.

Few loose threads have proven as stubbornly persistent as the moment in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ where Chris Hemsworth’s Thor appears on a TVA monitor, visibly crying while cradling a bloodied Deadpool. The scene lasted only seconds, but it sparked an ongoing joke that Ryan Reynolds has kept alive for over a year, most recently reviving it during a Comic-Con appearance where he pressed Paul Rudd for answers on stage.

Reynolds has now confirmed, once again, that fans really will get an explanation eventually. Speaking about the scene, he said, don’t we all want to know why Thor was crying, adding that he wants to know too, that fans will find out at some point, and that he’s excited for people to find out, according to Entertainment Tonight.

It’s a familiar refrain from Reynolds, who has spent months teasing the mystery without ever actually spoiling it. Back when the film first premiered, he wrote on social media that he knew why Thor was crying and simply couldn’t unknow it, a line that only intensified fan speculation rather than settling it.

The scene itself comes from a TVA sequence in which Deadpool is shown glimpses of his possible future while sitting across from Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Paradox. One clip freezes on Thor holding an injured Wade Wilson, tears streaming down his face, before Paradox quickly changes the subject and insists it’s an event from the distant future.

Since Hemsworth didn’t actually film new footage for the cameo, with the studio instead repurposing an image from 2013’s ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ the moment has taken on a life of its own separate from any confirmed connection to Thor’s actual MCU storyline. That hasn’t stopped fans from building elaborate theories connecting it to Deadpool’s potential fate in future Avengers films.

Reynolds has leaned into the ambiguity at nearly every opportunity since the movie’s release, treating it less like an unanswered plot hole and more like a running bit he can pull out whenever the timing suits him. His recent Comic-Con exchange with Rudd, where he demanded to know Thor’s whereabouts and got joking deflections in response, only added another chapter to the saga.

Chris Hemsworth has played along as well, previously responding to Reynolds’ online teasing with his own cryptic remark about being able to keep secrets too. Between the two actors, neither has budged on offering any real details, keeping the mystery firmly intact more than a year after the film’s release.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ currently in production and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ still to come, fans have plenty of theories about where Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hemsworth’s Thor might eventually cross paths on screen for real. Whether the crying scene ends up as an actual plot beat or simply another elaborate red herring remains to be seen.

For now, Reynolds’ latest comments suggest the answer is coming, even if there’s still no clear timeline for when. Given how long this joke has already stretched, fans may need to keep waiting a while longer before the mystery is finally put to rest.
