Michael Waldron Confirms Marvel’s ‘Nova’ Movie Will Address Thanos’ Destruction of Xandar

Marvel’s cosmic corner of the MCU has carried unfinished business ever since Thanos wiped out an entire planet in pursuit of the Power Stone. That single, devastating act has loomed over the franchise for years, waiting for the right story to finally address its full consequences.

Fans have long wondered how exactly Marvel Studios planned to handle that loose thread once Richard Rider’s long-awaited Nova project finally materialized. Given how central Xandar and the Nova Corps were to that particular chapter of Thanos’ rampage, any story built around the character seemed destined to eventually confront it head-on.

Michael Waldron has now confirmed that Marvel’s upcoming ‘Nova’ movie will indeed address Thanos’ decimation of Xandar. When asked directly whether the film would deal with the planet’s destruction, Waldron responded simply that whoever takes on the character would have to reckon with that history, adding a firm “yeah” to confirm it, according to TheWrap.

That confirmation arrived during an interview primarily focused on promoting Season 2 of Waldron’s Hulu comedy ‘Chad Powers,’ giving the Marvel comments an unusually candid, low-pressure context compared to a dedicated press tour for the project itself. Waldron used the same conversation to express genuine enthusiasm for the character, saying he loves Nova and loves Rich Rider specifically.

Thanos’ assault on Xandar during ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ remains one of the more consequential, if under-explored, moments in the franchise’s cosmic storyline. The attack wiped out the Nova Corps, the interstellar peacekeeping force that gave Richard Rider his powers in the comics, effectively erasing the institutional backbone that would typically support a hero like Nova within the MCU’s established continuity.

That absence creates a genuine storytelling challenge for whoever eventually brings the character to the screen, since a faithful adaptation would need to either explain how Rider gained his powers without the Corps intact or find another way to reconcile his origin with what Thanos already destroyed. Waldron’s confirmation suggests the film won’t simply ignore that continuity gap in favor of a clean slate.

Beyond addressing Xandar’s destruction, Waldron also spoke about the broader challenge of figuring out where Nova’s story should begin. He pointed to the 2006 “Annihilation” comic crossover as an obvious touchstone, while acknowledging that Rider’s history spans so many different eras that deciding whether to start him on Earth or already established in space as part of the Nova Corps has likely contributed to why the character has taken this long to reach the screen.

That structural question becomes even more complicated once Xandar’s fate factors into the equation, since a story that begins with Rider already part of an active Nova Corps would need to either take place before Thanos’ attack or address the aftermath directly from the outset.

Beyond Nova, Waldron remains attached to write both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ giving him significant influence over how Marvel’s cosmic and Earth-based storylines intersect moving forward. That level of involvement across multiple interconnected projects suggests his approach to Xandar’s destruction in Nova could tie directly into broader threads explored across those upcoming Avengers films.

With Waldron now juggling all three projects simultaneously, fans finally have some concrete sense of how seriously Marvel intends to treat one of its more significant unresolved plot threads.
