Paul Bettany Reveals How Marvel Suddenly Replaced Jac Schaeffer on ‘VisionQuest’

The road to Marvel’s VisionQuest has taken an unexpected turn. The Disney+ series was supposed to be the final part of the story that started with WandaVision, a project closely connected to writer and producer Jac Schaeffer. But Schaeffer eventually stepped away from her role as showrunner, leaving Star Trek: Picard veteran Terry Matalas to take over the series. For Paul Bettany, who has played Vision since 2015, the change came as a major surprise.

Bettany recently opened up about the situation while speaking with Entertainment Weekly. He explained that Schaeffer’s exit was connected to personal reasons and not some major creative fight behind the scenes. Still, that did not make the news any easier for him to handle. Bettany had worked closely with Schaeffer on WandaVision and had been expecting to reunite with her for VisionQuest, so the sudden change hit him hard.

“I felt like the rug had been pulled from under my feet,” Bettany said when talking about the moment he learned Schaeffer would not be finishing the trilogy. He also made it clear that his relationship with Schaeffer remained strong, saying, “I love her very much, and we made a lovely thing together. I had been waiting and looking forward to having my turn with Jac.”

That makes the timing of the change even more surprising. Bettany said there was almost no time to process what had happened before Marvel had already moved forward with a new creative leader. “And then 24 hours later, I was at a lunch with Terry, because that’s the speed at which Marvel moves,” he explained to Entertainment Weekly.

Schaeffer has previously explained her own side of the story. The creator said the decision came down to the schedules for Agatha All Along and VisionQuest overlapping in a way that made it impossible for her to handle both projects properly. She described leaving with “a very heavy heart,” while also making it clear that she remained excited about VisionQuest and wanted the show to succeed.

Marvel quickly found a replacement in Matalas, and Bettany says the new showrunner did not take long to win him over. One of the ideas that immediately caught Bettany’s attention was Matalas’ focus on what he called “intergenerational digital trauma.” That concept fits perfectly with the strange history of Vision and his connection to artificial intelligence, technology and the many personalities that have shaped his life.

Things became even more interesting when Matalas revealed that James Spader would return as Ultron. The villain was seemingly destroyed in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but VisionQuest is bringing him back in a very different situation. Bettany has already described the idea of putting Vision and Ultron together again as one of the wildest concepts he has encountered in the MCU.

Schaeffer may no longer be running the show, but she has not completely left VisionQuest behind. She remains attached to the series as an executive producer alongside Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Mary Livanos and Matalas. That means her connection to the trilogy is still very much there, even though she is no longer the person making the day-to-day creative decisions.

VisionQuest will continue the story of White Vision, who regained his memories at the end of WandaVision before disappearing to figure out who he really was. The new series will explore what happens next while bringing back several important pieces from Vision’s past, including Ultron.

For Bettany, the change was clearly difficult at first, but he eventually became excited about what Matalas wanted to do. The result could give VisionQuest a very different feel from the earlier shows while still connecting it to the story Schaeffer helped build.
