Ruaridh Mollica Teases What ‘VisionQuest’ Could Reveal About Tommy Maximoff’s Bisexuality

VisionQuest is already shaping up to be an important chapter for Marvel’s Westview story, but Tommy Maximoff could end up bringing something more personal to the series. Ruaridh Mollica, who plays the grown-up version of Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s son, has opened up about whether the show will explore Tommy’s bisexuality, an important part of the character in Marvel Comics.

Tommy is returning to the MCU after the events of Agatha All Along left his story in a very different place. The character is now living in the body of Thomas Shepherd, giving Marvel a chance to explore what it means for Tommy to figure out who he really is while also dealing with everything that comes with being connected to Wanda and Vision. That makes his return about much more than simply bringing another young superhero into the story.

Mollica discussed the subject in a new interview with SFX Magazine. When asked if Tommy’s bisexuality would be directly mentioned in VisionQuest, the actor admitted that he does not know if the series will make it an obvious part of the story. Still, he hopes something from his own life can naturally influence the character. Mollica is bisexual himself, and he explained that he would like that part of his identity to come through in the way he plays Tommy, even if the show does not directly label the character’s sexuality.

That could leave Marvel with an interesting choice. Tommy’s sexuality has already been established in the comics, where he eventually becomes the superhero Speed. His relationship with his brother Billy, better known as Wiccan, is also a major part of his comic book history. The MCU has started bringing some of those elements into live-action, but it has not always spelled everything out.

Billy’s story is a good example. Joe Locke played the character in Agatha All Along, and while the series made his identity clear to many viewers, it did not spend a huge amount of time explaining every part of his personal life. Tommy could follow a similar path in VisionQuest, with his identity being treated as one part of who he is rather than the entire focus of his story.

There is also another person who could become very important to Tommy’s journey. New images from VisionQuest have shown Mollica with Lauren Morais, who plays Lisa Molinari. Lisa is expected to have a close connection with Tommy in the series, and that relationship could give the character a chance to grow outside of his family history.

Comic book fans may already recognize Lisa’s name. In Marvel Comics, she is connected to the superhero identity Coat of Arms. It is still unclear how much of that comic history will appear in the Disney+ series, but her presence suggests that Tommy’s story may have plenty going on beyond his connection to Vision.

The larger plot will also put Tommy in the middle of Vision’s problems. White Vision is expected to be pulled into a dangerous situation after a bounty hunter named Paladin, played by Todd Stashwick, goes after him. That puts Vision on the run and could bring Tommy into the action in ways that are much more personal than a normal superhero fight.

Mollica’s comments are especially interesting because VisionQuest is the final part of the Westview trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along. Those shows have dealt with grief, family, identity and loss, so Tommy’s personal journey fits naturally into the kind of story Marvel has been building in this corner of the MCU.

VisionQuest is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on October 14. With Tommy finally stepping into the spotlight as an adult, the series could give fans a much closer look at who he has become and what kind of person he wants to be.
