Marvel has been having a very different kind of year. After a few seasons of mixed reactions from fans, the MCU suddenly has people talking again, and that excitement is showing up far beyond movie theaters. Now, Disney has revealed a major Disney+ record that shows just how much interest has returned to Marvel’s library.

According to Disney Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston, Marvel Studios titles were watched for more than 420 million hours on Disney+ during August. That is the biggest monthly total Marvel has ever reached on the streaming service. The number is especially impressive because it is not being driven by one brand-new Marvel show. Instead, fans are going back through older movies and shows while getting ready for what comes next.

A huge part of that renewed interest appears to be connected to ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ The movie is still months away from its December 18 release, but its marketing campaign has already become a major event. Disney says the excitement around ‘Doomsday’ helped drive more than 200 million additional hours of Marvel viewing on Disney+ compared with normal levels. In other words, fans are not simply watching trailers and talking about the movie online. They are going back into the MCU itself.

That makes sense when you look at what Marvel has been doing lately. The ‘Doomsday’ trailer became the second-biggest movie trailer launch ever and has also become Disney’s most-viewed trailer in history. The studio has kept the movie in the spotlight with major announcements and unusual marketing moves, including its huge cast reveal.

Deadline reported that the ‘Doomsday’ cast-reveal livestream attracted 275 million digital views and generated 3.1 million social media mentions. That kind of attention is hard to ignore, especially for a movie that still has months before it reaches theaters. Every new piece of information seems to send fans back to the MCU to revisit older characters and stories.

The success of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has also helped create this new wave of Marvel excitement. The film has already made more than $2.4 billion worldwide and is now one of the biggest movies ever released. Its success has given superhero movies another major boost and has helped put Marvel back at the center of the entertainment conversation.

There is also a big nostalgia factor at work. ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore’ is returning to theaters on September 25, giving fans another chance to experience one of the most important MCU movies on the big screen. Its trailer reportedly collected 77 million views in its first 24 hours, which is more than four times the previous record for a rerelease trailer.

Even ‘Doomsday’ ticket sales are showing how strong the interest has become. Disney has announced that domestic presales have already passed $50 million, despite the movie still being months away. More than 70 percent of those early sales are for Infinity Vision screenings, suggesting that fans are willing to spend more to get the biggest possible experience.

The timing is important for Marvel. The years following ‘Avengers: Endgame’ were not always easy for the MCU, with several projects receiving mixed reactions and some releases struggling to match the huge numbers of Marvel’s earlier years. But this latest Disney+ record suggests that fans may be ready to fully jump back in.

There is still plenty more coming before ‘Doomsday’ arrives. ‘VisionQuest’ is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, keeping Marvel in the spotlight as the theatrical release gets closer. Then, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is waiting on the other side of the MCU’s next big chapter.

For now, the Disney+ numbers may be the clearest sign yet that Marvel’s comeback is not just about one successful movie. Fans are returning to the entire universe, revisiting old favorites and preparing for what comes next. After years of uncertainty, that is a very good sign for the MCU.

What do you think this Disney+ record says about Marvel’s future?
