‘The Odyssey’ Wraps Its China Box Office Run With a Result That Beat Even Universal’s Own Projections

International box office milestones don’t always get the same fanfare as a franchise blockbuster’s opening weekend, but for a three-hour, dialogue-heavy epic built around Homer’s ancient poem, every dollar earned overseas tells its own story. Christopher Nolan’s latest film has spent the past month proving that even his talkier, more cerebral style of filmmaking can still find a massive audience outside North America.

China has historically been one of the trickier markets for Nolan’s work, with previous films like ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Tenet’ both settling in around the $60 million range during their theatrical runs there. That opening weekend delivered $36.3 million over three days, beating ‘Tenet’s’ previous $29.8 million debut to give Nolan his biggest three-day opening ever in the country, according to Fiction Horizon’s coverage of the release. By early September, the film had crossed the $100 million threshold, a milestone that pushed it past the China runs of ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Tenet,’ and ‘Inception,’ leaving it second only to ‘Interstellar’s’ $122 million lifetime China gross among all of Nolan’s films.

Variety’s box office reporting noted that crossing the century mark also made ‘The Odyssey’ the first Hollywood film that’s neither a sequel nor an established franchise title to cross $100 million in China since the pandemic reshaped the country’s theatrical landscape, and only the twelfth Hollywood film of any kind to reach that mark in the post-COVID era. That achievement came while competing directly against a crowded local release calendar, including the war comedy-drama ‘Once Upon a Time in the Middle East,’ which held the number one spot at the Chinese box office for five straight weekends running.

China’s contribution now stands as one of the more surprising success stories in ‘The Odyssey’s’ overall box office journey, especially given Nolan’s historically mixed relationship with the territory. The film’s final China performance adds another data point to what has already become one of the year’s most dominant theatrical runs worldwide, with the movie’s global cumulative total continuing to climb well past the billion-dollar mark throughout its release.
