Marvel has spent the past several months rolling out trailer footage for its next major crossover event in carefully staged phases, each one revealing new pieces of a puzzle that’s been building since 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ With the film’s December release date closing in, that promotional rollout has now reached its most nostalgia-driven chapter yet.

The first two ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ trailers generated genuinely mixed reactions online, with fans split between excitement over Robert Downey Jr.’s debut as Doctor Doom and frustration over what some viewed as familiar, cameo-heavy beats reminiscent of past crossover films. Despite that online debate, theatrical screenings of the earlier trailers had consistently drawn enthusiastic in-person reactions, with fans across multiple countries filmed applauding, screaming, and cheering as the footage played before other films.

Now a third trailer has debuted exclusively in theaters, this time playing in the immersive ScreenX format and focusing entirely on the original ‘X-Men’ film cast from the 2000s. The footage marks the franchise’s most direct nod yet to Fox’s earlier mutant movies, folding that legacy directly into the MCU’s biggest crossover event.

The new footage opens inside Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, with Ian McKellen’s Magneto delivering a weighty voiceover: “Death comes for us all. It’s all I know for sure. The question isn’t, ‘Are you prepared to die?’ The question is, ‘Who would you be when you close your eyes?'” The trailer then cuts to a close-up of Xavier’s empty wheelchair, followed by a chess piece rising off the board, before showing Xavier and Magneto sharing a warm embrace.

That emotional beat gives way to a dramatic sequence featuring James Marsden’s Cyclops, visibly distraught as fiery destruction unfolds behind him, shooting his signature red optic blast while kneeling amid what appears to be the aftermath of a devastating loss. A massive Sentinel robot looms in the background of the shot, hinting at the kind of large-scale mutant-hunting threat the returning X-Men will be up against.

The trailer closes with on-screen text confirming, “The X-Men will return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,'” followed by a countdown to the film’s December release. This marks a notable shift from the previous two trailers, both of which centered primarily on Chris Evans’s return as Steve Rogers and broader Multiverse Saga setup, rather than directly spotlighting the legacy X-Men cast.

Marvel’s decision to debut this footage exclusively in theaters, rather than releasing it online immediately, continues a pattern the studio has used throughout this campaign. Fan-shot reaction videos from earlier trailers showed audiences in locations ranging from Paris to India erupting into applause and cheers at key reveal moments, suggesting Marvel has found real value in letting these moments play out first as communal theatrical experiences before eventually posting them online.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters December 18, 2026, bringing together an ensemble that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, and Letitia Wright, alongside the returning X-Men cast now confirmed to include McKellen’s Magneto and Marsden’s Cyclops. With online trailer reactions still running hot and cold, this theatrical-first approach to the X-Men reveal suggests Marvel is betting that seeing these legacy characters return will land more powerfully on the big screen than through a phone screen scroll.
