Disney Teams Up With Kakao To Chase Its Own ‘K-pop Demon Hunters’ Success Story

Streaming rivalries have taken plenty of unexpected turns over the past year, but few genre breakthroughs caught the industry off guard quite like Netflix’s animated K-pop phenomenon did. Between chart-topping soundtrack hits and a genuinely massive cultural footprint, that film’s success has clearly gotten the attention of competitors who want a piece of that same lightning-in-a-bottle magic.

Disney has already built a meaningful presence in the Korean entertainment market, including its first original regional show, ‘Moving,’ along with a library of K-pop-focused films and documentaries covering major acts like BTS. That existing foothold is now expanding significantly, with the company betting big on finding its own version of the genre-defining hit that’s dominated conversations across music and film alike.

Disney Korea has struck a new deal with Kakao Entertainment to launch what the two companies are calling a “K-culture fund,” aiming to pursue roughly ten projects over the medium to long term. According to Deadline, the partnership is designed to bring together K-pop intellectual property with Disney’s own stories and characters.

The timing of this deal makes the underlying motivation fairly clear. Disney and Kakao are unmistakably looking at the massive success of Netflix’s animated musical ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ a film about rival K-pop bands secretly moonlighting as demon hunters that became last year’s biggest breakout hit and reshaped conversations around K-culture on a global scale.

In their joint statement, the two companies described their goal as collaborating on projects that fuse K-pop IP with Disney’s storytelling and characters, aiming to elevate the broader K-IP ecosystem and create new opportunities on the global stage. A spokesperson for Kakao Entertainment framed the partnership around K-pop’s evolution into a genuine global cultural force, one that now shapes trends well beyond music alone, touching fashion, beauty, and lifestyle more broadly.

Both companies were careful to note that the specific structure and financial backing behind the “K-culture fund” still need to be finalized, and neither side has yet attached a concrete dollar figure to the initiative. That stands in contrast to some competitors’ more explicit financial commitments to Korean content, though Disney and Kakao have signaled their intent to move forward on formalizing those details.

This new partnership builds on Disney’s history of experimenting with K-pop content through prior collaborations, including its earlier deal with BTS’s label Hybe, which produced multiple exclusive streaming titles spanning documentaries, concert films, and reality programming for Disney+ and Hulu audiences. That track record suggests Disney isn’t approaching this new venture blind, but rather building on existing relationships within the Korean entertainment industry.

With ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ having demonstrated just how massive the crossover potential between animation, music, and Korean pop culture can be, competitors across the streaming landscape are clearly recalculating how much they’re willing to invest in similar projects. Disney’s ten-project commitment with Kakao represents one of the more ambitious responses yet, signaling that the studio wants to be a serious player in this space rather than simply licensing existing K-pop content after the fact.

Whether any of these upcoming ten projects manage to replicate the specific cultural lightning that made ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ such a phenomenon remains to be seen, but Disney’s willingness to commit to a long-term pipeline rather than a single one-off project suggests the studio is treating this as a genuine strategic priority rather than a passing trend.

What do you think of Disney teaming up with Kakao to create its own KPop Demon Hunters-style hits?
