Michael B. Jordan Reveals Why He’s Stepping Away From Hollywood Next Year

Michael B. Jordan has spent the better part of the last decade moving from one high-profile project to the next without much of a pause, building one of the most consistent runs in modern Hollywood. Between blockbuster franchises, directing credits, and awards season campaigns, the actor has rarely slowed down long enough to catch his breath.

That relentless pace is finally catching up with him, at least by his own admission. In a new cover interview, Jordan opened up about just how much the past year has taken out of him, both physically and mentally.

The 39-year-old actor revealed that he plans to take most of 2027 off from acting, calling it a period meant for reflecting and processing everything that’s happened in his career recently. The announcement comes for Vogue’s October 2026 issue, where Jordan spoke candidly about the toll of his nonstop schedule and what pushed him toward finally hitting pause.

Much of that exhaustion traces back to earlier this year, when Jordan won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his dual portrayal of Smoke and Stack in ‘Sinners.’ Rather than basking in the victory, he described getting sick the very next day, spending four days recovering on an intravenous drip as his body essentially shut down after a grueling awards season.

The illness meant he missed out on celebrating properly with old friends who had traveled from New Jersey for the occasion, a detail he seemed to genuinely mourn. It’s the kind of story that reframes an Oscar win not just as a triumph, but as the finish line of a race that had clearly worn him down.

Jordan also reflected on whether he ever could have been satisfied taking a quieter path as a working actor rather than chasing leading man status. He suggested his own competitiveness made that kind of restraint impossible, saying he’s always wanted to be mentioned among the greats in whatever he pursued.

Before Jordan can actually take that break, he still has a packed slate to work through. He’s currently filming a new version of ‘Miami Vice’ alongside Austin Butler, and he’s also producing ‘Delphi,’ a spin-off of the ‘Creed’ franchise he helped build.

Following that, spring 2027 brings the release of his reimagined take on ‘The Thomas Crown Affair,’ a film Jordan is directing, starring in, and producing. He’s previously said his version of the iconic thief character will carry a different motivation than the ones portrayed by Steve McQueen and Pierce Brosnan in earlier adaptations, arguing that a wealthy protagonist stealing purely out of boredom doesn’t resonate with audiences the way it once did.

Only once promotional duties for that film wrap will Jordan actually begin his planned time away from the industry. In a lighter moment during the same conversation, he also floated the idea of walking away from acting altogether to pursue his long-documented love of anime, though he framed it more as a half-joking possibility than a firm plan.

Whether Jordan’s break turns into a brief reset or something longer remains to be seen, but for an actor who has barely stopped moving since ‘Fruitvale Station,’ even the suggestion of a full year off feels notable. It’s a rare moment of vulnerability from a star who has built his career on relentless drive, and fans will be watching closely to see how he actually spends that time once ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ hits theaters.
