Prime Video Pulls the Plug on ‘Ride or Die’, but the Road Trip May Not Be Over

Few streaming comedies arrive with the kind of pairing that ‘Ride or Die’ had. Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham led a buddy spy story that premiered on Prime Video on July 15, and it landed with real momentum. The series followed two lifelong best friends whose getaway turns chaotic when one of them is revealed to be a lethal secret.

Spencer plays Debbie Claybourne, while Waddingham plays Judith Burton, an international assassin whose double life drags them both across Europe. Creator Tessa Coates, showrunner Matt Miller, and director Peyton Reed executive produced alongside the two stars, and Bill Nighy also appears in the cast. All 8 episodes dropped at once, which gave viewers plenty to binge.

Now the story has taken an unexpected turn. Deadline broke the news on September 20 that Prime Video has canceled ‘Ride or Die’ after 1 season, and that Paramount TV Studios is shopping the show to other buyers. The post announcing it drew more than 202.7K views on X in a matter of hours, along with 426 likes and 84 reposts.

The reaction online has been one of disappointment. One fan replying to the post called the news upsetting and said it was a great show, a sentiment that many viewers seem to share. The image attached to the report shows the two leads in a red convertible with bullet holes in the windshield, which now looks like a cheeky farewell.

Prime Video Just Launched Its Biggest Streaming Bundle Yet, and It’s Packed With Fall Premieres

What makes the decision so surprising is how well the series performed. It debuted at No. 8 on Nielsen’s overall streaming chart and No. 3 among originals with 869 million minutes viewed. In its second week, it climbed to No. 4 overall and No. 2 among originals, and it was reportedly Prime Video’s most-watched new scripted series in the past year during its first 2 weeks.

Luminate’s data told a similar story. After just 2 days, the show recorded 927,000 views, twice that of ‘Elle’ and nearly 4 times that of ‘Off Campus’, both of which have since been renewed. Critics were on board too, with the season holding a 96% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Prime Video has not publicly explained its choice. Deadline reported, citing sources, that the show’s appeal among middle-aged women may have counted against it, because that group is seen as less valuable for attracting new Prime customers. That is a reported theory, not something Amazon has confirmed.

There is some wider context worth noting. The cancellation comes 3 months after Amazon MGM Studios elevated Kara Smith to head of drama and restructured other leadership roles in its television department. Several executives, including the previous drama head, exited as part of those changes.

The production history is also a little tangled. The series was first developed at Skydance Television before moving to Paramount Television after Skydance Media’s acquisition of Paramount Global. Amazon MGM Studios, Spring Tide, Double Dream and Orit Entertainment were also producers, so multiple companies have a stake in what happens next.

For fans, that is where the hope lies. With Paramount TV Studios reportedly seeking a new home, a second season is not entirely off the table. Strong ratings, glowing reviews, and 2 well-loved stars are exactly the kind of package other streamers tend to notice.

Whether a rival service steps in remains to be seen, but the show’s performance certainly gives Paramount a compelling pitch. For now, the road ahead for Debbie and Judith is uncertain.

What should happen to Ride or Die after its cancellation?
