Alan Ritchson Reveals Why ‘Reacher’ Never Adapted His Favorite Lee Child Novel
Every ‘Reacher‘ season brings the same fan debate about which Lee Child book comes next. The Prime Video hit has jumped around the source material rather than following publication order, and viewers keep guessing what is on deck. Now the show’s star has explained why one fan-favorite story never made it to the screen.
The series works this way because the novels function largely as standalone stories. They share the same protagonist, but each one is self-contained enough to follow without the preceding books. The first season adapted the debut novel ‘Killing Floor’, and later seasons have moved through the catalog out of order, with Season 4 drawing on ‘Gone Tomorrow’, the thirteenth book.
That freedom is what made one omission stand out. In a Threads exchange, a fan wrote that they understood why the show might avoid the earlier novels, given their less standalone nature. The same fan said they were sad each year to learn the next season wouldn’t be the book in which Reacher fights through a white supremacist militia camp.
Ritchson replied that the book in question, ‘Die Trying’, is his favorite, and that he had it approved before someone got re-elected. ScreenRant’s tweet promoting the story drew 15.9K views, 312 likes, and 14 reposts on X after it went up on September 19. Complex and other outlets read the comment as a reference to Donald Trump’s 2024 election win, though Ritchson didn’t spell it out, and neither Prime Video nor Amazon has commented in the coverage found here.

‘Die Trying’ is the second novel in Child’s series, published in 1998. It begins when Reacher helps a young woman named Holly Johnson with her crutches on a Chicago street, only for both of them to be kidnapped at gunpoint. They are driven 2,000 miles across the United States, unaware of why they were taken.
According to Complex, citing ComingSoon.net, the season had reportedly been ready to move into production before it was shelved. That would make the change late in the process rather than an early idea that never got off the ground. Ritchson’s remark fits that timeline, though the exact details remain unconfirmed.
It also isn’t a new wish for the actor. Ritchson told Empire in early 2022, while promoting the first season, that ‘Die Trying’ was an amazing book he wanted to get to, and he also name-checked ‘The Hard Way’, the tenth novel. Back then, he wasn’t even sure whether the show would adapt the books in order.
The news arrives at a busy moment for the franchise. Season 4 wrapped on Prime Video this month with a fictional Indonesian militia as its villain, and the same day the spin-off ‘Neagley’, starring Maria Sten, premiered. The flagship show is also set to return for Season 5 with Ritchson.
That leaves plenty of material to pick from. The Jack Reacher series has 30 novels and short stories, and only a handful have been adapted across film and television. Tom Cruise’s two movies covered ‘One Shot’ and ‘Never Go Back’, which leaves most of the catalog open.
Still, the story shows how much fans care about individual book choices. For some viewers, ‘Die Trying’ is the one that got away, and Ritchson’s comments have reignited that wish. Whether the story ever appears in a later season is unknown, and nothing in the reports suggests it is planned.
For now, the show keeps moving forward with a big spin-off and another season on the way, but the question of that skipped novel isn’t going away. Ritchson’s candid reply has made sure of that.
