Netflix’s ‘Unabomber’ is a thriller inspired by true events that follows Ted Kaczynski from his days as a Harvard prodigy to his life as the domestic terrorist known as the Unabomber. The film reaches the streamer on Friday, September 25, and it arrives with a cast led by Jacob Tremblay, Russell Crowe and Shailene Woodley.

Tremblay plays the young Kaczynski, while Crowe plays Henry Murray, the Harvard psychology professor who oversees the experiments. Woodley plays FBI agent Joanne Miller, the woman tasked with hunting Kaczynski down. Miller is a fictional character, which signals that the manhunt storyline blends invention with history.

Annabelle Wallis plays Christiana Morgan, who ran the Harvard Psychological Clinic alongside Murray. Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg and Marc Menchaca also appear in the ensemble.

To prepare, Tremblay studied investigative recordings of the adult Kaczynski in order to absorb his cadence. He also told Netflix that he wanted to play Kaczynski as a real person rather than a caricature, drawing on his own experience of working among older colleagues and feeling out of place.

Director Janus Metz told Netflix Tudum that the film moves between “the making of the Unabomber and the capture of the Unabomber.” That structure gives the plot two distinct engines that feed into each other.

The first timeline returns to the 1950s, when Kaczynski was a math prodigy at age 16 and became a subject in disturbing psychological experiments led by Murray. The second jumps to the 1990s, where Miller follows a lead tied directly to his Harvard years and relies on his own manifesto to close in.

Screen Rant notes that Murray’s real experiments examined how well human belief systems hold up under stress, and that the film appears to mix historical accuracy with dramatization. Woodley sees a parallel between her character and Kaczynski, since neither is willing to back down from their instincts, even though their motives differ sharply.

Kaczynski’s mail bombing campaign killed three people and injured 23 more. Collider observes that the film aims to stand apart from earlier screen versions by focusing on his little known Harvard years, which may have shaped his tendencies.

The ‘Unabomber’ Trailer and First Look Images

Netflix released the official trailer on August 27. It centers on Kaczynski’s college years and the experiments he underwent.

In the footage, the young Kaczynski confides, “Sometimes I feel like I don’t belong here.” The trailer also teases a tense tone and closes on the release date.

USA Today debuted the first look photos on July 29, and Tremblay told the outlet that his character has “no idea of the man he’s going to turn into.” That framing suggests the film wants viewers to watch a young student before they watch a killer.

Metz described Murray as charismatic and seductive, someone Ted comes to see as a father figure until the reality of the experiments hits him.
