Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death Officially Confirmed More Than a Month After Her Passing

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Tuesday, September 22, that Panettiere’s death has been ruled an accident caused by the toxic effects of multiple drugs. “The cause of death has been ruled as toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol and Quetiapine,” the coroner’s office said in an official statement, adding that there were “no signs of trauma” that would have contributed to her death.

Panettiere, 36, died on August 16 at a South Carolina apartment complex where she had been temporarily staying. According to the coroner’s office, a 911 call reporting a cardiac arrest came in at approximately 1:51 p.m. from the residence, and first responders arrived to find her unresponsive.

The Greenville Police Department has said its preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances surrounding her death. Reports have indicated that her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother were the ones who found her and called 911, later providing authorities with a bag of medication she had been taking.

Beyond the coroner’s ruling, the Drug Enforcement Administration has also been investigating the circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death, reportedly looking into where the drugs involved may have originated. Officials have indicated that establishing a clearer timeline of her activities before her death could help identify the source of the substances that contributed to the fatal toxicity.

Panettiere’s relationship with Hickerson had previously drawn scrutiny, having reportedly ended around 2020 amid allegations of domestic violence, though her mother told reporters the two were still seeing each other at the time of her death.

Panettiere first captured audiences as a child actor before becoming widely known for her breakout role as cheerleader Claire Bennet in NBC’s ‘Heroes,’ a performance that made her a household name. She went on to headline ABC’s ‘Nashville’ and later returned to the horror genre she helped define as a teenager, appearing in both ‘Scream 4’ and ‘Scream VI.’

Her death came just a few years after the sudden loss of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who passed away in 2023 at age 28 due to an enlarged heart and aortic valve complications. Panettiere had spoken publicly in the years since about how deeply that loss affected her, both emotionally and physically.

With the coroner’s official findings now released, fans and loved ones finally have concrete answers following weeks of public speculation about what led to Panettiere’s sudden passing. The ongoing DEA investigation, however, suggests further details about how the drugs reached her may still emerge in the coming months.
