‘Other Mommy’ Cast Guide and Character Breakdown (With Photos)

Jessica Chastain leads the ensemble of ‘Other Mommy’, a supernatural horror film directed by Rob Savage and written by Nathan Elston. The film is based on Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House and arrives in theatres on October 9. The story centers on a child whose family becomes the target of an entity she calls her other mother.

The ‘Other Mommy’ cast pairs a veteran lead with a young newcomer and a supporting group of recognizable faces. Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed and Karen Allen make up the billed supporting players. Moayed is a Tony Award nominee who became widely known as Stewy Hosseini on ‘Succession’, though his role in the film has not been disclosed.

Jessica Chastain

Chastain plays two roles, Ursula and the entity known as “Other Mommy”. Ursula is Bela’s mother, while the second role is a manifestation of the entity.

The entity is a doppelgänger that looks like Ursula, which makes it difficult to tell the creature from the real mother. That setup places the performance at the center of the film’s tension.

Chastain won the Oscar for Best Actress for ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’, and horror audiences also know her from ‘Mama’ and ‘It Chapter Two’. This marks a return to the genre for her.

Arabella Olivia Clark

Arabella Olivia Clark plays Bela, a young girl targeted by the Other Mommy. Bela is eight years old and lives in a home already strained by her parents’ marital issues.

Bela develops a connection with the being and believes it is harmless, even as it becomes increasingly threatening to her family. That misplaced trust drives much of the story.

The film is Clark’s biggest role to date and her first major studio feature. Her earlier credits include ‘The Housemaid’ and ‘The Hand that Rocks the Cradle’.

Jay Duplass

Jay Duplass plays Russ, who is Bela’s father and Ursula’s husband. The character is also referred to as Daddo, and Duplass is known for ‘Transparent’ and ‘Industry’.

Duplass was the first of the supporting actors to be announced, joining the production in May. His casting set the tone for a grounded family drama beneath the horror.

The source novel’s story shows cracks in the parents’ marriage as the incidents around the house escalate. As Bela’s father, Duplass sits at the heart of that strain.

Karen Allen

Karen Allen plays Grandma Ruth, Bela’s grandmother. The family in the story consists of Mommy, Daddo and Grandma Ruth, alongside the entity.

Allen was added in July, at the same time the film was retitled. Early reports on her casting did not share details about the character she would play.

Allen is best known as Marion Ravenwood in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. The studio describes her as a screen legend from the Indiana Jones films.

Dichen Lachman

Dichen Lachman is billed in the supporting cast as an Actor Award nominee for ‘Severance’. On that series she plays wellness counsellor Ms. Casey.

Her role in ‘Other Mommy’ remains undisclosed. She joined the project after Duplass and before Allen.

Lachman’s earlier work includes ‘Dollhouse’, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and ‘Jurassic World Dominion’. With her character and Moayed’s both kept under wraps, which of those hidden roles do you expect to matter most once Chastain’s two performances collide in ‘Other Mommy’?
