‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been one of the biggest theatrical events of the year. Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as the web-slinger opened exclusively in theaters on July 31 and quickly began rewriting the record books.

The Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures release opened with $360.1 million at the domestic box office, according to The Numbers. It has since earned around $2.5 billion worldwide and become one of the highest-grossing films of all time, while also earning Rotten Tomatoes’ Certified Fresh status.

Now, attention is turning to the film’s streaming debut. According to Global Box Office, ‘Brand New Day’ will stream exclusively on Netflix in December under Sony’s licensing deal with the streamer, a pact the account values at $7 billion to $8 billion.

The post went further, predicting the film will become Netflix’s most-streamed non-original movie of all time. It also pointed out that Sony was behind the streamer’s most-watched original film as well.

That film is ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’, produced by Sony Pictures Animation. The animated musical racked up more than 236 million views, overtaking ‘Red Notice’ to become Netflix’s most-watched film ever. Fans should keep their expectations in check for now. Neither Sony nor Netflix has officially announced a streaming premiere date for ‘Brand New Day’.

What is clear is where the film will land first. Sony and Netflix announced a new multiyear agreement in January that makes Netflix the exclusive “Pay-1” destination for Sony’s feature films after their theatrical and home entertainment releases.

Pay-1 is the industry term for a film’s first subscription-streaming window. Under the arrangement, Sony titles generally remain on Netflix for around 18 months. Predictions vary. Data cited by What’s on Netflix points to a possible November 28 premiere, while Global Box Office says the film will arrive in December.

Until there is an official announcement, any date should be treated as a forecast rather than a confirmed plan. After its Netflix run, the film is expected to move to Disney+. Decider estimates that could happen sometime in 2027, possibly around April.

Fans who don’t want to wait already have options. As of October 6, ‘Brand New Day’ is available on premium video on demand through platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home.

It costs $24.99 to rent and $29.99 to buy. A Blu-ray and DVD release, including a 4K Blu-ray Steelbook with variant cover art, is set for December 15. There may be another theatrical chance as well. Deadline has reported that a re-release with extended footage is in the works.

Not everyone is excited about the streaming talk. One reply to the Global Box Office post argued that Sony has effectively given Netflix a dedicated window for its movies, while others questioned the focus on streaming numbers over the film’s theatrical success.

Still, the potential is hard to ignore. With a massive box office run behind it and Netflix’s global audience ahead, ‘Brand New Day’ could become one of the most-watched licensed movies the streamer has ever had.

Whether it can match ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ remains to be seen. Either way, Sony’s two biggest Netflix moments would show just how valuable the studio’s partnership with the streamer has become.

Will you rewatch ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ when it arrives on Netflix?
