‘RJ Decker’ Season 2 Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: Reggie Gets a Second Chance
‘R.J. Decker’ returned on ABC with “The Angler,” an hour in which a murder at a fishing tournament pulls R.J. into a case that turns personal when a figure from his past resurfaces. This ‘R.J. Decker’ recap walks through the case, the way it was solved, and what the closing scenes suggest about the central relationship.
Beau Bridges began his recurring arc as R.J.’s father, Reggie Decker, in this installment. The hour gave viewers a full hour of Bridges and offered more insight into R.J.’s background and his own struggles.
The Angler Recap and the Fishing Tournament Murder
R.J. is hired to monitor a local fishing tournament for possible cheating, and he immediately singles out Reggie as the likely suspect. Evidence later proves that Reggie is cheating, which is enough to disqualify the fisher he partnered with on his latest venture.
The job soon becomes more complicated. The case involved competitive fishing, a cheating gig for R.J., and a tech company that led a dead man to believe he had seen a UFO. Given his history with his father, R.J. spent much of the hour suspecting Reggie was involved in both the cheating and Finch’s death.
The investigation runs through a handful of colorful suspects. They include the victim’s former wife, who is overly prepared for questioning because of her love of true crime podcasts, and a best friend who believes aliens cloned the body police found. “The Angler” was written by Liz Friedman and directed by Ken Biller.
Ending Explained as the Drone Killers Are Exposed
The solution hinges on a drone that was used to lift the dead body into a tree. R.J. and Mel land on the right theory but lack enough evidence to obtain a warrant.
The culprits turn out to be the pair behind a drone company. They provide security for the tournament and are developing a drone that can carry a human body, and they killed a man because he uncovered evidence that their technology was stolen. They also made little effort to cover their tracks.
That sets up Reggie’s biggest moment. He goes undercover wearing a wire, and the killers believe he is helping them because he wants a small stake in their company. He even persuaded the actual killers to hand over the murder weapon by pretending to help them throw the police off their scent.
R.J. believed in his father enough to suggest the plan, and it gave him the confession he needed. The case closes quickly, which leaves the emotional storyline to carry the finish.
Reggie Decker and Beau Bridges Reshape R.J.’s Backstory
In an exclusive first look, TVLine shared ABC’s description of Reggie as a charming and endlessly optimistic entrepreneur with a habit of empty promises. He has been largely absent from R.J.’s life, always insisting that a big score was just around the corner.
The episode also fills in some of R.J.’s childhood. R.J. explains that he eventually stopped looking for his father’s love or stability because Reggie let him down so often. Reggie virtually abandoned the family after his divorce and did not show up when R.J.’s mother became sick.
Collider described the reunion as a messy but genuine attempt at reconciliation that reopens old fights. Scott Speedman told EW the father and son bond is fraught, and he teased that their story is “not over yet.”
What the Ending Means for R.J. and Emi and the Rest of the Cast
Emi, who was arrested and charged with killing her father Victor only a week earlier, is the person R.J. confides in about Reggie. Her name was cleared in the previous episode when Janis turned herself in. Their bond still feels easy, even though neither seems ready to define it.
The rest of R.J.’s circle also gets room to react. Mel and Catherine helped him work through the emotions his father stirred up, and the hour included a party to mark the end of his probation. Mel and Catherine also keep nudging him toward Trudy, though one reviewer felt the show forces that angle.
By the close, Reggie chooses to stay in the area for R.J., and the two fish together while competing over who catches the biggest remaining fish. TV Fanatic gave the hour four out of five and called the effort to repair that relationship its highlight. With Reggie now sticking around Fort Lauderdale, do you think R.J. can finally trust his father, or is another hustle waiting just beyond the next fishing trip?
