Halle Bailey Stuns in Draped Black Gown at ‘The Debut’ Premiere During the New York Film Festival
Jesse Eisenberg’s new musical comedy has been building buzz ever since its world premiere at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival on September 5. Now ‘The Debut’ has made its way to New York, bringing its star-studded cast, including Halle Bailey, to one of the city’s most prestigious film events.
The A24 film stars Julianne Moore as Mona Friedman, a shy New Jersey housewife who lands a part in a local stage musical despite having zero experience. Overlooked at home by her husband and teenage twins, she finds the theater world transformative, and eventually dangerous, as she digs deeper into her role while clashing with the production’s domineering director, played by Paul Giamatti.
On October 7, the cast reunited at Alice Tully Hall for the film’s New York premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival. Among the standouts on the red carpet was Bailey, who was making her first appearance at the festival.
Bailey turned heads in an elegant black gown with a fitted, leather-look bodice and a dramatic draped panel sweeping over one shoulder. The floor-length design featured a high leg slit that added movement as she posed for photographers.

She paired the gown with strappy black heels and kept her accessories simple. Her long, curly hair fell loose past her shoulders, completing a polished yet relaxed look. The photos quickly drew attention online. Her sister Chloe Bailey was among the first to react, calling Halle her pretty sister in a sweet reply.
In the film, Bailey plays Stef Mercer, the charismatic star of the fictional musical ‘Nosy Neighbors’. Her character is part of a warm theater community that welcomes Mona into rehearsals, offering a stark contrast to her life at home.

Early reviews have singled out her work. One NYFF review praised Bailey for delivering a strong performance as the production’s star and called the film one of the funniest of the year.
Bailey was joined on the red carpet by Eisenberg, Moore and Giamatti, along with fellow cast members Bernadette Peters, Havana Rose Liu and Eldar Isgandarov. Variety shared footage of Eisenberg introducing Moore and the cast at the event.
Emma Stone also attended alongside husband Dave McCary and Ali Herting. The trio produced the film through their Fruit Tree banner, with Stone wearing Louis Vuitton for the occasion.

‘The Debut’ marks a new kind of project for Eisenberg, who earned an Oscar nomination for ‘A Real Pain’. He wrote and directed the film and also wrote the music and lyrics for the show-within-the-film, while Emile Mosseri composed the score.
The film’s cast also includes Colton Ryan, Bonnie Milligan, Lilli Cooper and Maulik Pancholy. Bailey and many of her co-stars joined the project in April 2025, when A24 boarded as distributor and filming began.
The New York Film Festival runs through October 12, with additional screenings of ‘The Debut’ scheduled during the event. Several of them include Q&A sessions with Eisenberg, Moore, Giamatti and Bailey.

The film’s festival run continues at the Hamptons International Film Festival, where it screens on October 9 at Guild Hall. On Letterboxd, it currently holds an impressive 4.04 average rating from early audiences.

For Bailey, the premiere marks another milestone in a growing film career. Her first NYFF appearance showed she can command a red carpet as confidently as she does the screen.
