Amanda Seyfried has built an impressive career playing characters caught in tense, unsettling situations, including her recent role in ‘The Housemaid’. But it turns out the scariest moment of her week didn’t come from a script at all.

The 40-year-old actress has been sharing more glimpses of her home life on Instagram lately. On October 6, she posted a calm, cozy Reel of herself strumming a dulcimer and singing a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.”

That peaceful moment didn’t last long. Partway through the performance, Seyfried’s 9-year-old daughter, Nina, quietly crept up behind her wearing the iconic Ghostface mask from the ‘Scream’ films, delivering a jump scare that has since gone viral.

In the clip, Seyfried sits wearing a black ‘Cinderella’ T-shirt, focused on her song in a warmly lit room. About halfway through, Nina appears small in the doorway, dressed in a black hoodie and the famous white mask.

Her long blonde hair peeked out from under the hood as she moved closer and closer. Her dark outfit blended into the dim room until the mask caught the light, growing larger in each frame while her mom kept singing.

Seyfried eventually spotted her daughter’s reflection in the camera. She gasped, screamed, and leaned back, while Nina stood calmly behind her in full costume before the recording ended.

The moment quickly spread beyond Instagram. Celebrity friends couldn’t resist joining in. Lindsay Lohan, Seyfried’s ‘Mean Girls’ co-star, liked the post, as did Naomi Watts, Nikki Reed, Olivia Wilde and Chelsea Handler.

Krysten Ritter responded with crying-laughing emojis, while Natalie Portman also left laughing reactions. Even the official ‘Scream’ Instagram account chimed in with a playful apology for the fright.

Fans noted that Nina’s slow, theatrical approach showed real comic timing. Seyfried has previously described her daughter as a natural-born actor, and the video seems to back that up.

Many viewers joked that Seyfried didn’t need to act scared for once. Her reaction was genuine, and that’s exactly what made the clip so entertaining. The video offers a rare glimpse of Seyfried’s daughter, as the actress usually keeps her children out of the spotlight.

She shares Nina and son Thomas Jr. with her estranged husband, Thomas Sadoski. The couple welcomed Nina just days after their wedding, and Thomas Jr. arrived in 2020. Seyfried has previously described her approach to parenting with Sadoski as yin and yang.

The clip also highlighted Seyfried’s love of music. Her singing has drawn attention before, and in June she told GQ that one of her performances had gone so viral it even impressed Beck. Her dulcimer cover was clearly meant to be a quiet, personal moment. Instead, it became one of the internet’s favorite Halloween-season videos.

With October in full swing, the prank arrived at exactly the right time. Ghostface remains one of horror’s most recognizable figures, and fans loved seeing the mask used for a harmless family joke.

For Seyfried, it’s a reminder that the biggest scares can come from the people closest to you. Judging by the reactions, fans are already hoping Nina has more pranks planned before Halloween.
