‘Clayface’ Early Reactions Are In, and DC’s Body Horror Gamble Is Drawing Bold Comparisons

DC Studios is taking one of its biggest creative swings yet with ‘Clayface’. Instead of a traditional superhero adventure, the third film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is an R-rated horror thriller centered on one of Batman’s oldest and most tragic villains.

Not everyone understood the choice at first. When a social media user recently asked who wanted a Clayface movie at all, Gunn fired back on Threads, comparing it to ‘Back to the Future’ and arguing that Hollywood shouldn’t only make films based on familiar IP that audiences have voted for.

So far, the early buzz suggests the gamble may be paying off. While official reactions from critics have not yet arrived, reports from test screenings indicate that audiences loved the film.

Early viewers have compared ‘Clayface’ to an intriguing mix of titles, including ‘Joker’, ‘Vanilla Sky’, ‘The Substance’ and 2008’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’. Those comparisons hint at a blend of body horror, emotional drama and tragic character study.

One social media insider who saw the film described it as very good and funnier than expected. They also noted that it is extremely gory and fully embraces its R rating. One of the biggest takeaways from early reactions is just how self-contained the film appears to be. Reports claim Batman does not appear and isn’t even mentioned.

The same insider said there are no cameos, surprises, or post-credits scenes, making ‘Clayface’ feel truly standalone. That approach allows the story to focus entirely on Matt Hagen’s personal descent.

Not every early detail has been met with excitement. Some viewers raised concerns that the film may not feature many full-body transformations for its title character, despite being a body horror movie.

Reports suggest fans shouldn’t expect the giant, shapeshifting creature often seen in comics and animation. However, a recently released clip shows Matt panicking as his face begins to transform mid-flight, with insiders describing a disturbing scene involving a pair of scissors during turbulence.

Reports also claim ‘Breaking Bad’ star Aaron Paul appears in a brief role. Marvel-level secrecy aside, the film seems determined to surprise audiences in its own way. ‘Clayface’ follows Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries, a Gotham street kid turned rising Hollywood star whose life is shattered when a local crime boss leaves him horribly disfigured.

Desperate to restore his face, he seeks out an experimental treatment that sends him spiraling toward a monstrous transformation and a path of revenge. Harris has spoken about how much the project meant to him. Reflecting on the shoot, he said that “fear is a mark of caring about something and wanting to contribute to the greater piece,” he told Interview Magazine.

The film is directed by James Watkins from a script by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan and David Dencik round out the cast, with Volker Bertelmann composing the score.

Industry tracking has been encouraging. The film is projected to open above $30 million domestically following a solid start to presales, which is promising for a movie made on a reported $40 million budget. That modest price tag gives ‘Clayface’ a clearer path to profitability than many superhero films. A strong reception from critics could push it even further.

‘Clayface’ opens in theaters on October 23, right in the heart of the Halloween season. With official reviews still to come, the next 2 weeks will reveal whether the early enthusiasm holds.

For now, the film appears to be shaping up as one of DC’s most unusual and unsettling projects. If the test screening buzz is any indication, horror fans may be in for a memorable ride.

Do you think ‘Clayface’ will be a hit for DC with its R-rated body horror approach?
