Adult Swim’s ‘Common Side Effects’ quickly became one of the most acclaimed animated series in recent memory. Created by Joe Bennett of ‘Scavengers Reign’ and Steve Hely, known for ‘Veep’, ’30 Rock’ and ‘The Office’, the show premiered in February 2025 and blended conspiracy-thriller tension with deadpan humor.

The series follows Marshall, a fungi expert who discovers the Blue Angel, a mysterious mushroom with extraordinary healing powers. Alongside his former high school lab partner Frances, he soon finds himself pursued by pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and the DEA.

The first season earned a Peabody Award, 4 Annie Awards and nominations from both the Emmys and the Independent Spirit Awards. Adult Swim renewed the show for a second season in March 2025, and fans have been eagerly waiting ever since.

Now, the network has released the first teaser for Season 2, along with a firm premiere date. The new season debuts on Sunday, January 24, at 11 p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim, with episodes streaming the next day on HBO Max.

The date was first announced by Bennett and Hely during the show’s New York Comic Con panel on Friday. The short teaser followed on Monday, giving fans a fresh, eerie glimpse at what lies ahead.

The brief preview leans into the show’s trippy, unsettling atmosphere. It features ancient-looking stone carvings etched with swirling symbols, hinting that the Blue Angel’s origins may run deeper than anyone suspected.

Adult Swim also previously offered fans an extended first look at San Diego Comic-Con in July. The network shared new images from the season earlier this summer in connection with the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

Season 1 ended with the mushroom declared highly illegal and Marshall narrowly escaping a raid on a farm where it was being grown. He then fled to California. According to Hely, that setup allows the new season to slow down and tell a story about people living in hiding.

The shift promises a different kind of tension as the characters try to stay one step ahead. The creators have pointed to some exciting influences for Season 2. Bennett has cited his love of the Coen Brothers and 1990s thrillers like ‘The Fugitive’.

Hely has highlighted inspirations including the ‘Indiana Jones’ films, ‘National Treasure’, ‘The Social Network’ and ‘The Insider’. That mix suggests the season will balance adventure, mystery and corporate intrigue.

In a statement announcing the date, Bennett and Hely joked that they remain committed to their mission of healing humanity through mysterious mushrooms. Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen also praised the series for pushing adult animation into new territory.

‘Common Side Effects’ is executive produced by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, the duo behind ‘King of the Hill’. Judge also lends his voice to the series. The voice cast includes Dave King, Emily Pendergast, Martha Kelly, and Joseph Lee Anderson. The show is produced for Adult Swim by Bandera and Green Street Pictures.

With its striking animation and twisty storytelling, ‘Common Side Effects’ has built a passionate fanbase. The new teaser is sure to fuel plenty of theories about the Blue Angel’s mysterious past.

Fans now have just over 3 months to wait before the series returns. When it does, Marshall’s fight to protect the miracle mushroom looks set to become even more dangerous.
