‘9-1-1’ Season 10 Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: A Sinkhole Becomes a Volcano

Share:

The ‘9-1-1’ season premiere opens with a collapsing highway and closes with a burst of lava over downtown Los Angeles. Titled “That Sinking Feeling,” the episode aired Thursday on ABC and shows the sinkhole was only the beginning. The 118 now faces a disaster far larger than the rescue that started the hour.

The setup was no secret, since showrunner Tim Minear told TVLine “Funnily enough, it opens with a giant sinkhole.” This ‘9-1-1’ premiere recap covers the rescue, the warning signs and the personal storylines running beside the spectacle. Spoilers follow for everything including the ending.

The Episode Recap Begins With a Collapsing Highway

The highway opens up and crumbles beneath a tour bus and several cars, and the sinkhole grows so large it nearly takes Chimney with it. The team then descends into the hole to extract survivors and treat victims.

The sequence gives each responder a distinct job. Hen deals with an older man’s malfunctioning implanted defibrillator, while Buck and Ravi work to free a trapped father. Harry finds an actress trapped in a submerged car, and Eddie dives down to save her after she passes out.

The 118 saves everyone, but as the team prepares to leave, the water in the sinkhole begins to bubble. Collider found that the premiere establishes its characters well and makes viewers care about what happens to them. Fangirlish observed that Chimney, once hesitant about the captain role, now leads with real confidence.

Athena’s Detective Case and the Warning Signs Maddie Finds

Maddie meets with city officials, including Ty Worrell from the Office of Emergency Management, who wants to know why nobody saw the collapse coming. She discovers a twenty percent uptick in calls around the sinkhole in the days beforehand.

The 118 then responds to the aquarium, where the water appears to be turning to acid. A diver is burned by the water, and Hen establishes an airway as the team treats his injuries. Maddie and Chimney come to see the incident as part of a pattern of strange events.

Athena works a separate puzzle that turns out to be connected. Her case first looks like a construction accident, but she cannot let it go after the victim dies, and a diamond ring leads her to a jewelry store where she finds a vault with its contents gone.

The emptied vault conceals access to a tunnel, and Athena goes down alone as the situation above ground grows unstable. Seat42F called the solo descent a familiar way of putting her in danger, though it praised the investigation itself.

Buck and Theo Create a Quiet Conflict

Buck arrives at the hospital with a broken nose, and Eddie learns that Theo injured him during rough play inspired by a wrestling movie. Theo is Buck’s biological son, and Buck took him in after the boy’s parents died in a car crash.

At dinner with Eddie and Christopher, Theo’s roughhousing accidentally causes Christopher to fall. Christopher is fine and Theo apologizes, but Eddie is visibly frustrated and the evening ends with the tension unresolved.

Fangirlish pointed out that Buck has never pushed back on how Eddie parents Christopher, which makes this clash feel new and sets up a coming argument over how Buck raises Theo. The subplot grounds the episode in a quieter kind of pressure, away from the lava.

The Ending Explained and Who Dies

The warning signs converge in the final stretch, with strange water, unusual calls, a widening sinkhole and a piercing sound from below. Tremors give way to an eruption, and what everyone treated as a sinkhole becomes a volcanic emergency. A massive burst of lava explodes from the ruins in downtown Los Angeles.

Ty, who brushed off Maddie’s concerns, changes his tune when the sinkhole begins emitting the sound, but it is too late. A piece of molten rock lands on his head, making him the volcano’s first victim. The burned man from Athena’s case also dies earlier in the hour, while the survivors of the opening rescue all live.

Athena is in the tunnel beneath the jewelry store when the shaking starts, and the premiere shows neither a rescue nor her death. It also does not explain how a volcano emerged beneath downtown Los Angeles, since the acidic water and Maddie’s call analysis are clues rather than a full answer.

The next chapter, titled “Fire in the Hole,” arrives the following Thursday. With Athena trapped underground while the 118 races to evacuate a city on the edge of ruin, do you think she gets out in time, or is the volcano about to claim another familiar face from Los Angeles?
