‘La Bola Negra’ is written, directed and produced by Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, who are returning to filmmaking after creating the series ‘Veneno’ and ‘La Mesías’. The ensemble they assembled blends first time actors with some of the most decorated performers working today. Netflix lists Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close among the principal names.

The ‘La Bola Negra’ cast also includes Natalia de Molina, Albert Pla, Yenesi Suárez, Lorenzo Zurzolo, Antonio de la Torre and Mona Martínez. The story moves across three timelines, Republican Spain, the Civil War and contemporary Spain. According to Netflix Tudum, the directors wanted to tell “a story about freedom, legacy, and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility.” The film premieres on Netflix on December 4 in the US, following a theatrical run that begins November 6.

Guitarricadelafuente

Guitarricadelafuente is a Spanish singer-songwriter who makes his acting debut in the film. He plays a character named Sebastián. His casting signals that the directors were willing to look beyond established screen actors.

He appears first in the list of leads announced by Movistar Plus+, ahead of far more experienced colleagues. That placement suggests his role carries real weight in the narrative.

The film interweaves the lives of three men in three different eras, linked by sexuality and desire, pain and inheritance. A debut performer stepping into that material makes for one of the more closely watched choices in the production.

Miguel Bernardeau

Miguel Bernardeau plays Rafael. Audiences may know him from ‘Querer’ and ‘Élite’. He brings screen experience to a cast that leans heavily on newcomers.

The film also incorporates one of Federico García Lorca’s last, unfinished works. That literary thread gives the actors a layer of history to work with beyond the contemporary story.

The title itself comes from an unfinished play by Lorca, who was assassinated in 1936. Bernardeau’s character sits inside a project that treats that legacy seriously.

Milo Quifes

Milo Quifes plays Carlos. Like Guitarricadelafuente, he is making his acting debut. His name appears in every major cast announcement.

Variety style trade coverage describes him as one of the new talents discovered by the directors. That detail points to a deliberate casting approach, mixing fresh faces with proven names.

Netflix places him in the same group as Oscar winner Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. For a first time actor, that is a notable ensemble to join.

Lola Dueñas

Lola Dueñas plays Teresa. Netflix describes her as a Goya winner. She is one of the performers closest to the directors’ earlier work.

She won two Goya Awards, the Best Actress Award at Cannes, and the Feroz, Forqué and Platino Awards for ‘La Mesías’. That series came from the same creative duo, which makes her involvement a reunion.

Dueñas was named alongside Cruz, Close and Bernardeau when the leading cast was first reported. Her presence gives the ensemble a familiar anchor.

Penélope Cruz

Penélope Cruz plays Nené Romero. She is an Oscar winner who has also won three Goya Awards, a BAFTA, the Volpi Cup and the Best Actress Award at Cannes. Few Spanish actors carry that kind of résumé.

The film is co-produced by El Deseo, the company run by Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar. That connection places the project within a long tradition of Spanish cinema.

The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May to critical acclaim. Cruz’s presence adds international recognition to a story rooted in Spanish history.

Glenn Close

Glenn Close plays Isabelle Durand. She has won three Emmy Awards, three Golden Globes and three Tony Awards, and has been nominated for eight Oscars. Her involvement gives the film a recognizable name for English language audiences.

Calvo and Ambrossi said they were happy to confirm Close as part of the cast, and production began in Spain in August. Her arrival expanded what was already an unusually deep ensemble.

Pairing Close with Cruz and a group of debut performers makes this one of the more unusual casts of the year. Does Glenn Close’s Isabelle Durand feel like the right counterweight to Penélope Cruz’s Nené Romero in a story about three men across three eras, and which performance do you expect to linger longest?
