‘Bloodsport’ Star Jean-Claude Van Damme (66) Puts Out His Birthday Candle in the Most Van Damme Way Possible
Few action stars have built a legacy quite like Jean-Claude Van Damme, the Belgian martial artist who conquered Hollywood with flying kicks, acrobatics and on-screen brawls. Born Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg on October 18, 1960, in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels, the man fans know as “The Muscles from Brussels” has been a fixture of action cinema for decades.
That legacy started early. His father enrolled him in a Shotokan karate school when he was just 10 years old, and he earned his black belt about a decade later, laying the foundation for a career built on martial arts. On Sunday, the action icon turned 66, and social media quickly filled with tributes. One short clip in particular has been racing around the internet.
The 7-second video shows Van Damme standing in a bright, modern living space, ready to tackle the candle on his cake. Set to music from the ‘Kickboxer’ soundtrack, he snuffs out the flame with a quick, forceful punch through the air instead of a traditional blow.
His outfit fit the moment perfectly. He wore a dark robe stitched with his JCVD initials, a matching cap and sunglasses, giving the scene the effortlessly cool energy fans have come to expect.
The cake itself was a showpiece. The blue creation featured his initials in gold letters and was covered in gold coins, cash, and small figurines, including representations of his dogs.

A “Happy Birthday” message ran along the base, completing a celebration that felt equal parts playful and extravagant. Van Damme also shared Instagram stories showing friends and fellow actors sending birthday wishes using iconic scenes from his films.
Part of what makes the clip so charming is how sharp he still looks. Roughly 4 decades after arriving in Hollywood, Van Damme maintains a routine focused on mobility, flexibility, light weights, cardio, and breathing exercises.
He has explained that he takes a smarter approach to training these days, learning from past experience to avoid injuring his back or legs. He even recommends starting strength work with 1-kilogram weights until proper posture is locked in.
Fans celebrating the milestone have been revisiting the films that made him a star. ‘Kickboxer’, released in 1989, followed his character Kurt Sloane seeking revenge on a fearsome champion and is regarded as the first film to bring Muay Thai to a global audience.
Made on a reported budget of $2.7 million, the movie went on to earn around $50 million. Tributes have also highlighted classics like ‘Bloodsport’, ‘Hard Target’, ‘Sudden Death’, ‘Replicant’ and ‘The Expendables 2’.
In 1994, he starred in ‘Timecop’, one of his most commercially successful films, as an agent policing time travel. That same year, he played Guile in ‘Street Fighter’, a role now taken over by wrestler Cody Rhodes in the franchise’s new big-screen adaptation.
He has also shown a willingness to poke fun at his own image. In 2008’s ‘JCVD’, he played a version of himself caught up in a hostage situation at a post office, a film that let audiences see a more vulnerable side of the action hero.
It would be easy to treat this as just another celebrity birthday post, but the reaction says a lot about his enduring appeal. With a single robe, a cap, a cake, and one well-timed punch, Van Damme reminded everyone why he remains one of the most beloved action stars of his generation.
