How ‘The Rainmaker’ Built Its Legal World Far From the Story’s Setting
Viewers who tune in to ‘The Rainmaker’ are shown a legal drama that moves John Grisham’s story to present day Charleston, South Carolina. The series premiered on USA Network on August 15, 2025, and its Southern backdrop looks convincing on screen. That polish is the reason so many people end up asking where the show was actually shot.
The answer to where ‘The Rainmaker’ was filmed lies well outside the American South. Primary filming ran from October 2024 to March 2025, and the production shot in Ireland rather than South Carolina. The choice says a lot about how modern television is made, and it shapes the look of the show in ways that are easy to miss.
Dublin Filming Locations Behind ‘The Rainmaker’
Dublin served as the primary filming location for the series, and the production reportedly used its streets to replicate a US setting. The city’s offices and buildings were dressed to pass as American ones.
The most notable Dublin site is a hospital. St. Mary’s Hospital in Phoenix Park, Chapelizod, was turned into a fictional North City Hospital for the show. The real facility specializes in stroke rehabilitation, which makes the transformation a notable piece of set dressing.
The hospital matters because of where the story goes. A large part of the series was filmed inside a hospital or a courtroom, especially for the storyline built around a medical negligence case. Those interiors carry much of the show’s dramatic weight.
Even the lead character’s home is a Dublin creation. In a set tour video, USA Network revealed that Rudy Baylor’s Charleston loft is actually part of a set located in Dublin.
County Wicklow and the Production Base
Dublin was not the only Irish location. Some sequences were shot in County Wicklow, which is often called the garden of Ireland, with the town of Bray and the town of Wicklow serving as primary backdrops.
County Wicklow also supplied the production with a studio home. Ardmore Studios in Bray Business Park is another Wicklow location that featured in the series. A permanent studio base gives a production control over interiors in a way that location shooting cannot.
Local reporting points to specific shoot dates in the area. Filming in Bray was concentrated on dates such as December 17, 2024, while the town of Wicklow hosted numerous exterior scenes thanks to its scenery. A November 2024 Facebook post from the Irish agency MovieExtras.ie also mentioned scenes being filmed across the county.
The county has a long screen history of its own. Wicklow has been a favored choice for prestige productions for years, and a series based on Norse legends was filmed almost entirely in the Wicklow Mountains.
Why the Charleston Setting Was Recreated on Camera
The shift in setting begins with the source material. Grisham’s novel is primarily set in mid 1990s Memphis, Tennessee, and the series changes both the geography and the cultural flavor. The move to Charleston was a creative decision that came before any filming location was chosen.
Earlier adaptations followed the book more closely. The novel was adapted into a 1997 film starring Matt Damon as Rudy Baylor, and that version, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, was filmed on location in Memphis. The television series took a different route.
Money played a clear role in that route. According to reporting from The Post and Courier, Lionsgate decided to pull the production from South Carolina, because Dublin’s urban infrastructure can pass as Charleston streets for a fraction of the cost. The same report notes that Ireland has a strong crew already in place and an incentive program offering 40 percent cash back for using local staff and resources.
Charleston still appears on screen. The production spent a few days in Charleston in January to capture footage of notable locations, and that material helps anchor the story in its stated setting.
Season Two Filming Locations and the Wider Plan
The two location approach appears to be continuing. An industry production listing shows that season two carries a shoot date of March 2026, with Dublin, Ireland and Charleston, South Carolina listed as its locations. That mirrors the first season’s blend of Irish production and Charleston establishing material.
The listing also places the series inside a larger plan. It describes the project as the first chapter in a larger franchise tentatively titled The Grisham Universe, with two books, two shows and one shared storyline. That suggests the production setup could matter for more than one series.
The people in front of the camera remain central to how the show lands. The series was developed by Michael Seitzman and Jason Richman, and Milo Callaghan plays Rudy Baylor. Madison Iseman and Karen Bryson also appear, with Bryson playing a grieving mother who takes on a powerful hospital.
Knowing that Dublin, Bray and a repurposed stroke rehabilitation hospital stand in for Charleston and its courtrooms changes how the series plays on a rewatch, so did the Irish streets ever make you doubt you were looking at Charleston while Rudy Baylor fought his case?
