When Marvel brought its biggest movie back to theaters, fans expected new footage, but few expected a fresh look at a Captain America wound hidden in ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’. The re-release returned to theaters on September 25 with a 185-minute runtime, subtle dialogue changes, and new scenes linking the story to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

The biggest visual change, though, has been the look of the film itself. The original ‘Endgame’ had a washed-out, low-contrast color grade, while ‘Encore’ gives the movie a major boost in saturation and contrast.

Now, that new grade has uncovered something many viewers missed for years. Fans are buzzing about a moment during the final battle where Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, is revealed to have taken significant battle damage during his duel with Thanos.

The richer contrast makes the injury on his forearm far easier to spot. As ComicBasics explained, a dark suit and a dark wound were tough to separate in the muted original, but the ‘Encore’ cut makes them much easier to read on screen.

The discovery also adds new meaning to a familiar beat. ComicBook.com noted that Cap wasn’t just strapping his shield to his arm to prepare for battle, but also trying to tourniquet the wound and stop further blood loss.

Sharp-eyed fans had technically flagged the moment before. Earlier lists of overlooked MCU details pointed out that Cap tightens the shield to put pressure on the injury Thanos gave him, letting out a pained grunt as he does it.

Even the original marketing hinted at the damage. In the trailer, a bloody, beaten-up Cap straps his shield to his arm ahead of the fight, while the finished film shows the shield already broken. What’s different now is visibility. A blink-and-miss detail has become a full-blown talking point, proving how much a crowded blockbuster can hide in plain sight.

Not everyone has embraced the new look. Creative Bloq reported that the updated grading has divided opinion, with some fans praising the more vibrant tones while critics question whether altering the film undermines its historical integrity and the Russo brothers’ original vision.

Others see it as a clear upgrade. ComicBook.com argued the new grading is the re-release’s best change, noting that the muted palette had followed the Russos since ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and continued into ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’.

There’s speculation the shift is meant to align the MCU’s visual language with upcoming projects. Many fans view it as a promising sign for how ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ might look.

The Russos have called ‘Encore’ required viewing, describing it as a narrative bridge between ‘Endgame’ and ‘Doomsday’. Its opening weekend added $86 million globally, pushing the film’s total to $2.8 billion.

Fans who missed it in theaters will likely get another chance soon. ‘Encore’ now has its own landing page on Disney+, though Disney has yet to confirm an official streaming date. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving on December 18, viewers have plenty of reasons to revisit the battle that started it all. This time, they’ll know exactly where to look when Cap straps on that shield.

Did the updated color grading in Avengers: Endgame Encore improve the movie for you?
