Mike Flanagan has built a reputation as one of horror’s most reliable storytellers, and his take on ‘Carrie’ is quickly proving why. The Prime Video series marks the first time Stephen King’s iconic 1974 debut novel has been adapted for television, with Flanagan serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

King and Flanagan’s longtime creative partner Trevor Macy also executive produce, with Amazon MGM Studios behind the project. All 8 episodes arrived on October 7 in more than 240 countries and territories. The modern reimagining stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a misfit teen who has spent her life hidden away with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret, played by Samantha Sloyan.

After her father’s sudden death forces her into public high school, Carrie must navigate a viral bullying scandal, the cruelty of the social media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers. Now, the numbers are in, and they’re impressive.

According to Nielsen, ‘Carrie’ premiered as the No. 1 streaming title in the United States for the week of October 5 to 11, racking up 1.26 billion viewing minutes in just 5 days. It also ranked as the top original series, with adults ages 18 to 49 making up 58% of viewers.

The competition was fierce, too. Netflix’s ‘Below’ landed close behind with 1.19 billion minutes, while ‘East of Eden’ took third with 1.16 billion minutes. Rounding out the top 10 were ‘Ted Lasso’, ‘The Big Bang Theory’, ‘Bluey’, ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’, Netflix’s ‘Animals’, ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ and ‘Bob’s Burgers’.

The milestone puts ‘Carrie’ in elite company for the streamer. TheWrap notes it’s Prime Video’s second-best series debut on Nielsen’s Top 10 this year among first-season shows, trailing only the ‘Reacher’ spinoff ‘Neagley’, which gathered 1.8 billion minutes in the same timeframe. ‘Carrie’ landed ahead of ‘Scarpetta’, ‘Ride or Die’ and ‘Spider-Noir’.

It’s also part of an impressive run for Prime Video. The streamer has claimed the No. 1 overall title 6 times in the past 8 weeks, with ‘Reacher’ accounting for the other 5. Prime Video didn’t wait long to reward the show’s success.

The streamer has renewed ‘Carrie’ for a second season, moving Flanagan two-thirds of the way through the 3-season arc he envisioned for the story. The first season ended on a cliffhanger that took a different direction from King’s original novel.

The series has also found a global audience. ‘Carrie’ topped Prime Video’s weekly global TV rankings in more than 105 countries, and JustWatch ranked it the No. 1 TV show in the week through October 18.

Reviews have largely been positive, with critics praising Flanagan’s modern take on the material, its themes and the performances, particularly from Howell and Sloyan. Some viewers have been divided over the changes from the novel, but that hasn’t slowed its momentum.

The stacked cast also includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton, Josie Totah, Amber Midthunder as the gym teacher, and Matthew Lillard as the principal. Heather Graham, Katee Sackhoff and Flanagan’s frequent collaborator Kate Siegel also appear.

Flanagan directed 4 episodes, including the premiere and finale, while Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata also stepped behind the camera. The series nods to the novel’s epistolary style, weaving in emergency calls, witness testimonies and police reports from the night of the prom.

Each episode from the second onward also opens with a short vignette about other women throughout history who possessed telekinetic powers. It’s a bold expansion of King’s story, and audiences clearly can’t look away.
