‘East of Eden’ Defies Streaming Trends as Florence Pugh’s Netflix Series Surges in Week Two
Adapting one of John Steinbeck’s most celebrated novels was always going to be a bold swing for Netflix. Zoe Kazan’s ‘East of Eden’ premiered on October 1 as a 7-episode limited series following the Trask family across multiple generations. Kazan has a deep personal connection to the material, as her grandfather Elia Kazan directed the iconic 1955 film adaptation.
This version takes a fresh angle. While the novel centers on the rivalry between 2 brothers in the vein of Cain and Abel, the series shifts its focus to Cathy Ames, played by Florence Pugh, whose relationship with the family ignites a chain of betrayal and jealousy. Pugh, who also serves as an executive producer, leads a cast that includes Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, Ciarán Hinds, Tracy Letts and Martha Plimpton.
Now the latest Nielsen numbers confirm the series is a genuine streaming hit. As Collider reported, ‘East of Eden’ racked up 1.16 billion minutes watched during the week of October 5 to 11, its second week of release. That represents a massive 49% increase in viewership compared to its first week.
The jump is especially notable because it runs against the usual pattern. The second week typically brings a decrease in views for new shows, but ‘East of Eden’ kept climbing instead. It landed third overall on Nielsen’s chart, just behind Netflix’s monster drama ‘Below’ at around 1.19 billion minutes. Prime Video’s ‘Carrie’ claimed the top spot.
Netflix’s internal data reflects the same momentum. The series drew 6.5 million views in its first 4 days, a figure that already made it the most-watched series anywhere on the platform that week. In its second week, it jumped to 12.6 million views and 87.7 million hours watched.

The show also entered the Top 10 in 86 countries. By its third week, it had added another 6.2 million views, pushing its total past 25 million views and 175 million hours viewed. That puts it on track to overtake Netflix’s other major Western offering this year, ‘Little House on the Prairie’, which has accumulated 29 million views so far.
The viewership success comes backed by strong reviews. ‘East of Eden’ holds a Certified Fresh score in the mid-to-high 80s on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the expanded character work from Pugh and Hoon Lee. Collider’s Therese Lacson called the series a daring new perspective on a familiar story.

Some observers have pointed out that the series wasn’t built as background viewing. Unlike many recent streaming originals, its characters don’t constantly repeat their motives for distracted audiences, making it a show that demands full attention. The adaptation’s impact is reaching beyond the screen. Penguin Classics reported a nearly 200% lift in sales of the novel across formats after the series was greenlit.

Filmed across several locations in New Zealand and co-run by Kazan and Jeb Stuart, the series appears to be the slow-burn prestige hit Netflix was hoping for. With word of mouth clearly driving its growth, ‘East of Eden’ may have even more room to climb in the weeks ahead.
